Serveral months ago, DirtecTV shut off my East coast feed of the 4 networks (I live on the West coast). On May 3, they decided to shut off the West coast feed leaving me with no network access because I cannot get OTA. I have two HR10-250s and the only choice I have is to devolve back to tuners only to get my HD networks or switch to another provider because although local channels are available in my area, D* has no HD DVR yet. I have been with D* for 10 years and invested $1,500 in HR10-250s, and what did the CSR offer: $10 off my subscription for a year. What a screwed up company!

Ya know, DirecTV would love to sell you every channel you're willing to buy. Alas, there are laws that limit what they can offer.
So basically you're mad at them for obeying the law?

Obeying the law may be one thing, but screwing up the availability of an MPEG 4 HD DVR is inexcusable. I am sure that Tivo would have been able to add MPEG 4 decryption to the HR10-250 a long time ago. Just greedy crap from D* instead of decent customer service. Now I have to wait until the new unit is available and then suffer through what I expect will be several months of an initially buggy HD DRV.

Out of curiosity, where do you live? I hope they're not going to do this for those of us in the L.A. market where the West feeds originate.

Then why doesn't TiVo have their own mpeg4 box out yet? HR10-250 won't ever be mpeg4 compatible.

If you live in the LA market then you are eligible for the LA feeds which will be Mpeg-2 for a long time. This is a problem for those of us who are not eligible for LA feeds and can't get OTA signals. Right now I get OTA but in October I will be moving further from the antennas and I will not be able to pull in the OTA feeds. I am hoping that DirecTV gets their act together by then and puts out the new HD DVR. I hope it also doesn't completly suck.
On the other hand if TiVo can come out with a series 3 by then and our local cable company isn't completely lame I may head back to cable.

Because DTV told TiVo 1 1/2 years ago that they were not interested in TiVo creating a MPEG4 box. TiVo instead has created a cablecard HDTV box, and is collaborating with the cable companies to offer TiVo software on other manufacturers' set-top boxes.
Murdoch decided to give the next gen DTV DVR business to his other company, NDS. Thus... the R15 and the soon? to be delivered HR20-250.
Enjoy.
