Replacing a Hard Drive

I was just given a DirecTV model R15, with the access card. The hard drive is totally dead. I have a 120 gig hard drive here that I could put in it, but my question is, how do I get the software installed on it to function? I read some about this instant Cake CD and using a windows machine to setup a hard drive in a PC then install it into the DVR unit. Is this what I need to do? And is that all that is required? Thanks for any help you can offer.

R15's can't be upgraded according to all the experts here. Sounds like you got a nice doorstop. :)

The R15 doesn't use Tivo software and can't be upgraded with any tools available online.
