View Full Version : DT Interface
I haven't seen any screen shots of the DT interface, or seen any write ups
When you hit the record button, how do you control which tuner is being used for a given recording?
When scheduling a recording, how do you determine which tuner will be used?
If a show is being recorded on tuner #1, and you hit the record button, is it smart enough to use tuner #2 without a prompt?
When you walk in the house, and the TiVo is in the middle of recording channel 15 on tuner #1, and tuner #1 is currently viewed on the screen - how is that indicated? For example, what if you hit the channel up button - will it automatically switch viewing to tuner #2 to channel 16 - even it had previously been on channel 30 or does it through up a dialog asking what you want to do, you does it switch to channel 31 on tuner #2, or does it depend on which tuner was manipulated last with the remote?
When viewing live TV, how do you know which tuner you are viewing?
How do you switch to view the other tuner?
Is there a tool to see what each tuner is doing at a given time?
How smart is it with clipping, season pass recordings and the availability of dual tuners? Do you have to manually juggle your season passes between the tuners, or does it use logic to figure out the best options? What if a show time slot moves, will it determine the best new use of both tuners?
I don't have a DT (yet), but I presume the general interface is like the dual-tuner DirecTivo models. If so, then you really don't know or care what tuner is being used.
You don't schedule a show for a particular tuner, you just schedule a show. Tivo figures out which tuner to use when - there's no need to think of it as tuner 1 and tuner 2, just the tuner that's displayed and the tuner that isn't.
To switch between tuners, hit the down arrow OR hit Info to bring up the info box and move down to the "switch tuner" icon (which will tell you what's showing (e.g. tuned) and/or recording on the other tuner) and hit select.
Tivo will attempt to use the "not being watched" tuner first to record a show, so if you are watching Live TV and have recording scheduled that don't involve using two tuners at once, you'll never know what's being recorded (without looking).
All you have to worry about is recording shows, not managing tuners.

I played with it last night for a little bit and read some of my book.. I set it from the guide to record 2 shows at once and saw them both recording.. On my mom and dads DVR box from cable they have a switch and have to switch from tuner 1 to 2.. This knows and you can either hit the live TV twice and it takes you to the other Tuner or you click info like said above and scroll down and it tells you what is being recorded on the other tuner.. So if your recording a show and want to change the channel it records on the one and your on the 2nd tuner when watching another show.. It's pretty cool!! I was wondering how to get from one tuner to the next and you hit the Live TV twice.. I love the new DT

I don't have a DT, but I bet you can get a general feel for how switching tuners works by watching the S3 video.

Baloney - the two tuners on tyhe DT models are not created equal - you can only record one digital channel at a time

If you are using it with analog cable using the internal splitters, then it the poster was correct about it not matter about which tuner is which.

I said the interface is the same, not the operation.

Their is two analog tuners (can not be used for OTA TV) that are both the same in the S2 DT. You can set up the unit to use both of those analog tuners or you can set the DT up to have the 2nd tuner be your cable box fed by the composite RCA cables (or SVHS cable) into the S2 DT. its your choice. But if you mean can you record two channels from the cable box at the same time the answer in no. That would require two cable boxes and two IR blaster outputs one for each cable box way too complicated so TiVo did not put that capability in the S2 DT

When you hit the record button, how do you control which tuner is being used for a given recording? I can answer this stuff without a DT in front of me (just yet) - if you hit the record button eitehr you are in the guide in which case it schedules a recording or you are watching live TV/Buffer adn it will record what you are watching and will use the tuner you are on.
When scheduling a recording, how do you determine which tuner will be used? why would you bother to determine which tuner? The TiVo will do that prgrammatically.
If a show is being recorded on tuner #1, and you hit the record button, is it smart enough to use tuner #2 without a prompt? hopefully the DT is just smart enough to ignore the record button since it is already recording what you are asking it to record. see the first answer above .
Ok - this gets to better questions that would need a DT in front of me for a final answer but basically the DT will know what it is doing on both tuners and can adjust according to a pretty simple set of rules - so it migtht just flip to the other tuner but what cahnnel you land on I would not know. or it might throw up a prmompt to ask if you want to go to the other tuner maybe. now if it knew both tuners were recording something then certainly a prompt would go up. Suggestions add in a bit of a twist but the DT will know between a scheduled recording or suggestion so it knows a suggestion can be blown away.
When viewing live TV, how do you know which tuner you are viewing?
How do you switch to view the other tuner?
Is there a tool to see what each tuner is doing at a given time?
I think people have reported on hitting live TV button switches - but why do you care what is on each Tuner other than by seeing it? as long as it prompts you before stopping a recording in whatever scenario all is good and like a single tuner. To a point here you get what you pay for and it is the Series 3 that had teh cool front LED panel that gave you this info. I guess you can hit now playing and see if two recoring icons are present or not - especially if you sort by record date.
How smart is it with clipping, season pass recordings and the availability of dual tuners? Do you have to manually juggle your season passes between the tuners, or does it use logic to figure out the best options? What if a show time slot moves, will it determine the best new use of both tuners?
again why in the world would TiVo make you manage the tuners. they have lots of code for that from the DirectTV TiVos - and DirectTV dual tuners never asked you about the tuners. You manage season passes by priority and the only hassle I can see is if you have a cable box hooked up for one tuner and it has to work with is the channel only available via the cable box or not. Also the same thing with 3 way conflict and clipping.
But I imagine the developers at TiVo spent some tiome on those things.

I just played around with mine and hitting the live TV button takes you from one tuner to the next or hitting the info button.. But mine was doing a recording on channel 4 on one tuner and I channeled up to #5 and it went right to 5 but was on the other tuner.. I just got my cable card put in to so if I am recording 2 shows on Analog I have another input to watch all my digital channels while Tivo is recording so that's cool.. Tonight I'll get to experience watching my 1st HD show.. Rose

to be clear the Dual Tuner TiVo series 2 does not use a cable card nor does it display or record HD.
Rose meant she has a cable card in her new HD TV and while the TiVo is recording two channels she can switch the TV to its own cable card input and watch a show in HD live (without skipping through commercials)
It is the series 3 due second half of this year that records digital/HD via a cable card on dual tuners.
Rose I know you were just posting away and not trying to imply anything :) but I just wanted to clarify for someone that is not familair with the DT sereis 2 yet.

Oh sorry!!! It's confusing I have to view channels 2-99 on one input and use my Tivo it functions fully on that input.. But on my other Input which is where the TV and cable card come in I can watch all channels 2-99 and digital on that input but cannot pause or rewind or record now do I have a guide when watching those channels..So I can record in Analog on one input then watch a HD show on the other input.. My new cable card input also has 2-99 and digital above that and the HD channels. But I mostly will keep it on the Tivo input so I can pause and rewind and have a guide to what I am watching.. I don't watch digital back there much excpet to check out an HD show.. Which tonight I will see what a show looks like on that TV in HD.. And I do know the Series 3 will be out soon with cable card so I may have to move the Dual Tuner to my Living Room and get the Series3 but for now I am ok with the way it is hooked up now and not being able to record in HD.. I just love the Dula Tuner it's really cool... Thanks, Rose
