Out of curiosity, where is the best place to put my server tivo for fastest transfers? Near the main router, or near the main Tivo? In other words do the packets go all the way back to the main router even if they are plugged into the same access point?

Yes, if there is only one segment on your local network, then all packets will go thru the router. If you are using a wireless access point, all traffic runs to the wireless router if the wireless access point is on the same segment as the router.

So it really doesn't matter where the box is connected if it is wireless, all traffic must go thru the wireless router. Typically most home network wireless routers are a combination of two devices, a simple router, and a hub.

Hope this helps.

Not strictly true.

Of course, on an Ethernet network, all frames go through the switch (or hub, but not many of those left anymore) -- after all, that's the physical connection between the two. Now, if your only switch is one built into the router, then yes everything goes through that box but it's happening at layer 2, not layer 3. The "router" portion of things doesn't get involved at all.

Anyway. For wireless devices it's a different story, as you point out. Bottom line...put it wherever you like. That's not going to be your limiting factor.
