Not a Tivo related question, but I'm sure many here could shed a little light on it for me. I posted this in AVSForums but nobody answered...

Do you ever think we will get to a point with Plasma technology where we see the 42" models move up to 1366x768 like their 50" brethren? I mean, we are starting to see 1080p 50" models, one would think there would be a trickle down effect on technology or is the glass just too small to fit the current technology.

Er, aren't the 42" models already 1366x768?

i'm not aware of anything better than 1024 x 768 in a 42", cheer.

Ah, you could be right. I was all focused on the vertical resolution. :)

I have yet to find a 42" plasma over the default 1024x768. Granted, there is a lot more to a great picture then just rez, I can't help but have some hang-ups. Easy solution, just buy a 50" but curiousty has me... is 42" glass just too small to fit the added pixels and will we ever see 1366x768 in this screen size. I mean, if they've figured out how to cram 1080p in a 50", full blown 720p in a 42" can't be that difficult.

We are? All the new models from Samsung/Panasonic are still 720p. 1080p seems to be the much larger screens (>=65"). If someone has 1080p @ 50", I'd love to know who (in a plasma variant, I'm still not a fan of LCDs in comparison).

Sp1dey....

Don't get too hung up on the 1080p thing.
Right now, we are BARELY getting any content in true 1080i.... barely.
It is going to be a significant while until content comes in true 1080p (not just a progressive convert from 1080i)

Basically what I am saying.... Don't go braking the bank right now. Get the plasma that is sized for the room you are using it in. Get at least 720p, pref 1080i.... it will last you a VERY long time. The defacto HD standard is going to be 720p or 1080i as that is what the vast BULK of the HD units out there are capable of doing.

I have a 50" that does 1080i, and the picture is just amazing. I know 1080p would be better... but.......... 1080i is just so darn good, that I am not loosing any sleep or paying 21.5% intrest on the extra it would have cost to upgrade to a 1080p for the 1 or 2 shows.

Oh no doubt, I am not a 1080p proponent at the slightest. My concern, really is specific to 42" screens and the fact that they all seem to have a native rez below 720p (1024x768). I was just curious if you think that now in the advent of 1080p 50" models we might see some 1366 or 1280x768 42" screens. If they are able to cram that many pixels into 50" glass, how hard would it be to up them on the 42"

Pioneer is suppose to have a 50" 1080p model going on sale later this year. Although with the hefty Pioneer mark up I suspect it will be cost prohibitive.

Don't these models fit that description?

I'm not familiar with MAXX brand, but the LG and Samsung are mislabeled on that website. While each model is no longer on LG and Samsungs websites, every other vendor I looked up has them listed as 1024x768. As far as I know, that is the highest rez on a 42" plamsa.

Does it have to be Plasma? There are several 1080p DLP units that run under $3000.

Oh I actually don't care about 1080p... I was just drawing the conclusion that since 50" models are now capable of producing greater pixels (1080p), will we see a trickle down effect on 42" models. I don't expect we will see 42" 1080p plasmas for quite a while if ever. I'm just curious if they technology exists to squeeze a few more pixels in 42" glass to bring them up from their native 1024x768 format to a full blown 720p resolution.

That is an interesting observation about 42" plasmas not having true HD horizontal resolution. I did find a few on vendor's sites but checking the manufacturers sites revealed the specs to be either deceptive or careless on the vendors part. It must be due to a technical difficulty since all the 42 inchers are 1024. That also answers a question I had once about why there is such a price gap between 42" and 50" plasmas.

Well, maybe you should. After seeing the Sony SXRD, I would recommend nothing less. The interesting thing is that while they may or may not reproduce HD slightly better than screens with lower rez, it turns out that they seem to do a much better job with SD content, ironically enough.
