I am looking into buying a Dual Tuner Tivo from Weaknees -

They are shipping a 180 GB model (their modification), and it is priced the same as TiVo's 180GB model will be when they ship it.

The main reason I am looking at getting the modified Weaknees model is that TiVo's rebate is only good until 6/3/06, and I am worried that TiVO will not ship their model in time to also get a rebate and a new rebate will not be avaialble (and I think the extra disk space will become important with two tuners).

Never ordering from Weaknees before, my concerns are along the lines of warrnity, quality of service and product, etc.

Any advice?

I've dealt with Weaknees a couple of times and they've always been great. Their upgrades void the manufacturer warranty, but their pre-upgraded units come with their own warranty which is actually slightly better then the manufacturer warranty. I'm not 100% sure about the rebate, but I think you should be fine since these units have never been activated and come with the original packaging.

1) Wouldn't worry about buying from Weaknees at all. Very reputible. Shouldn't have any problem with the rebate - same as buying from any other retailer.

2) As for the Tivo rebate on the official 180 unit - I'd be surprised if Tivo didn't have another rebate the follows the current one.

If you want a 180 now, the Weaknees may be the way to go. I believe you'll lose the pre-loaded instructional/informational videos on Tivo features, but that's it.

Actually it's a little better. Their warranty is 6 months parts & labor, 1 year parts. TiVo's warranty is only 90 days parts & labor and 1 year parts.

I actually asked the same thing in another thread. I saw the warranty and thought it was great, and I would rather have the 180hr now than whenever TIVO releases it. But, since I am an upgraded-units neophyte, I asked and was informed that weaknees uses drives that aren't very reliable. That had me reconsider.

I have a weaknees drive in my TiVo which has been going stong for several years. Of course YMMV.

I'm pretty sure Weaknees uses the same brand of hard drive as TiVo uses. So whoever told you that is full of it.

If you ask about any hard drive manufacturer you will find people who will swear they are the worse company in the history of the world. Take it with a grain of salt. The drives Weaknees uses are fine for TiVos.

I've used a drive from them for several years without issue. My current units were purchased directly from Weaknees. On one order I failed to use a coupon that they offered. I realized it a couple of hours later, I called and was given credit for the coupon. My sister did the same thing, she realized it 18 hours later and was able to get credit for the coupon.

I'll use them again.

Are there any coupons for them available now?
