hi I'm looking for a universal learning remote that is capable of controlling a Toshiba SD-H400 Series 2 Tivo. I dont really care if it cant control ALL the functions of the remote as long as it can control the basic Tivo functions and DVD playback functions. I was looking at the URC-8820 universal remote but I'm not sure if its what I'm looking for?

What I'm Looking for is:

1. A remote that can control my Tivo either by code or by learning

2. A remote that can have ALL buttons programed by pointing my other remotes at it and pressing buttons to have it record that signal

3. A remote with a reasonable price.

any help would be appriciated

The 8820 can learn upto 80 commands, it has a preset code for the H400, its Dvd 1996.

so is that 80 commands total or 80 commands per device?

Total. But the 8820 accepts advanced codes that use another memory bank, and don't count towards the 80 commands. Advanced codes are 5 digit codes for individual functions, like Thumbs UP-00145 or Thumbs Down-00141.

Unless you're really in love with the layout/thumbs buttons of the 6131/nw, or versed in customizing it thru the JP1 interface, there's little reason to choose the 6131 over the 8820.

As Edmund has repeatedly pointed out here and elsewhere, the xxx20 series has a newer, wider built-in code base, and is capable of learning more commands. I have one for my DVD Tivo and have never looked back. Progress is being made on reverse-engineering the JP1.2 interface, so it could even match the older remotes in that respect sometime in the future.

Even if it doesn't, it's only a $20 remote.

If these don't work on code 1996, then you might need to reprogram with dvd 0503, map the advanced codes and switch back to 1996:

You will need to add two zeroes to the front of each, since the 8820 only takes 5 digit advanced codes.
