View Full Version : Shelf life of a weaknees TIVO?

I have been looking at the weaknees dual tuner TIVOs (the ones they sell already upgraded to 180hr etc) and I would like to ask what has been people's experience with such kinds of DVRs in general. It is my understanding that TIVO will not offer any tech support should something go wrong. How reliable (in comparison to a TIVO official unit) are they?

Since Weaknees only uses Maxtor drives with their crummy one year warranty I would look elsewhere.

Like... get a box from TiVo and upgrade it yourself using a decent drive (eg. Seagate or Samsung) and InstantCake

Keep the original drive though, so if you get problems with the TiVo that aren't drive-related (unusual) you can replace it and send the whole lot back for a swap-out, then put the upgrade drive back into the replacement when it arrives ;)

Won't this void the warranty as well. Isn't that what the OP is trying to avoid?

The DTs are brand new. Does InstantCake even have an image for one?

I hear using regular mfstools backup/restore works just fine though.

Thanks for all the feedback. I guess I will wait until TIVO releases their own 180hr one (I am not a fan of upgrading it myself).

I'd go with the WeaKnees warranty, I was able to get e-mail support from Weaknees on Xmas Eve.
Includes a 180-day parts/labor WeaKnees warranty (twice the factory warranty) and a one-year parts warranty! (http://www.weaknees.com/tivo.php)

Maxtor drives have three year warranties (or longer) at this point. They changed back to three year warranties in late 2004, and they've been at three years ever since.
