Does an unsubed DTivo need to be connected to dish?

I just finished zippering my 3rd Dtivo that will be used only as a server/storage my other 2 and will remain unsubscribed. In fact after I have it up and running I will probably never have a monitor hooked up to it again. I know I don't need an access card, my question is does it have to be hooked up to the dish?

Nope as long as its connected to your network your golden. I have one that is used for storage and to play all my MP3's.

Do they need an access card if it there is not going to be a subscription?

I was thinking of doing this for my Kids Bedroom.

It just needs to see the card sensing switch depressed.
