Here is the situation, I am moving to a new house and would like to have tivo in three rooms. Right now I have a 4 year old Sony DirectTV receier with Tivo, and a 40hr stand alone tivo that is about 3 years old. Both have life time. I was wondering if I could upgrade the 40hr to a 80hr and then connect it to two tv's. It sounds like you can't transfer your lifetime to a new box,so what happens when the ones I have go bad? Can you send them in for repairs? If so I bet that is not cheap.
Thanks for your help
Scott

As far as I know that is the only way you could possibly keep your lifetime service once a box goes bad - by sending it into Tivo for repairs. Good luck with that.

The absolutely great thing about Lifetime with a DirecTV receiver with TiVo, Scott, is that the Lifetime is on your account, unlike the SA TiVo where lifetime is tied to the unit. I bought Lifetime on my first D-TiVo and have since upgraded to a Series 2 D-TiVo and the HD D-TiVo and the Lifetime is still on my statements.

As far as the SA TiVo, if you're comfortable opening a computer and aren't afraid to crack open the case on the SA TiVo, you could copy the TiVo image to your PC, back it up to media, and then you'd be able to copy it to a new hard drive if the hard drive fails. If a component on the board fails, then you'd probably have to send it in.

Thanks for the replys. Thats great to know about the directTV tivo because I probably will go high-def in a few years. I think I am going to upgrade my stand alone to 180hrs, that way I'll have a new hard drive and the space I'm looking for. Can I connect it to two tv's knowing that they will show the same thing?
Thanks,
Scott

You can run one TiVo to two TVs, with the same thing on both.

If any of the ones you have now go bad you'll probably just have to replace the hard drive. The lifetime is tied the the motherboard, so no problem.

If you send it in to get repaired at TiVo they won't fix your unit they'll just give you a refurb with the lifetime transferred to the flaky, beat up refurb.
