Why are they going to need a bigger couch?
Oh, wait..because she's fat. I get it.
Good one, MMG.

I have a serious dislike of Rosie. But I also have a SERIOUS dislike of The View, so oh well.
I do, however, get tired that weight is the last great group of people who can be made fun of. :(

Pretty much the same here, Angie. I don't have a "serious" dislike for either the show or Ms. O'Donnell, but I do a pretty good job of avoiding both.
And that doesn't have anything to do with anyone's weight, or sexual preference, or gender. :D

I just done like her at all.
Let's start a pool on how long before she brings up banning guns.

Yeah she's fat.
Would it be wrong if Portia De Rossi was joining The View and someone called her skinny?
Star Jones is black too by the way.

Got to give them credit. Interesting choice. Rosie can be earthy, funny, and engaging, when she's not busy trying to be militant. Had a very successful daytime talk show, is charitable, and not afraid to speak her mind (even though it sometimes results in distaste).
Why not Rosie? If nothing else, maybe she can take the sticks out of their... umm... let me rephrase that: If nothing else, she brings an edge to a very dull production.
Yes, Star Jones is black. But would it be OK to say, "Star Jones joined the view--guess they're going to need to buy more watermelon?"

I recommend anyone who has HBO check out "All Aboard! Rosie's Family Cruise." This is a very nice documentary about a cruise Rosie and her partner arranged for gay families.

Even though I don't care for her, I've seen things about this documentary and would like to see it someday. I don't get HBO, so it might be a while.

Fat is not a protected class. Race is. That's the difference.

Thank goodness Star doesn't smoke....just imagine the scrutiny she'd come under if THAT were the case! ;)

Not always. Fat is sometimes inherited. One of my very best friends is very heavy, and if you looked at her family, you'd know why-all of her family is large, and they eat very well and are active. Her sister played college softball, and she is also heavy.
Judging a person based on their size without knowing the full story says a lot about a person, just as judging someone based on any issue without knowing the full story does.

When I saw the bigger couch + Rosie comment, my first thought was they would need a bigger couch because Rosie needs a shrink, not because Rosie needs to shrink. She always seemed somewhat nuts.

While I completely agree with the sentiment behind your analogy, it doesn't quite fit here. "Black people eating watermelon" is a mean stereotype that may or may not be true. But fat people with large behinds actually do take up more real estate on a couch, at least compared to thinner neighbors. It's not a stereotype, per se... it's a matter of measurement and inches.
Why this needs to be the prefix on this (otherwise innocuous) entertainment news update is still up for questioning, however. I imagine the OP just doesn't like Rosie, and pointing out her size was an easy (and cheap) attempt at getting some laughs.

And how!
Actually, the headline wasn't mine. It was the original news link headline that upon further examination, had a lot of crude comments tacked on to it. When I realized this, I quickly changed the link but neglected to change the thread title. The original (and **not family friendly** link is here (http://www.defamer.com/hollywood/the-view/were-gonna-need-a-bigger-couch-rosie-to-join-the-view-170161.php) )
I apologize to any of you who were offended.

I am not a big Rosie fan and never watch the view, but this seems good for both sides. Rosie pretty much went out when she was on top with her talk show, so she is still likely to be able to pull an audience during daytime, which will probably benefit the View significantly.
That being said it is still a bunch of women sitting around cackling.

Okay now hold on there just a sec. At the risk of seeming insensitive I'm going to contradict one part of this statement. Fat is not inherited. Yes, a propensity for weight, a slow metabolism, and the "always hungry gene" can be inherited. But your body is still at its core, a machine. It has to obey the laws of physics, it cannot create fat out of thin air, it must be taking in more calories than it burns up.
So I fully agree that some people will have a far more difficult time maintaining a healthy weight than others. (And pretty much my whole family does have weight problems). But I see too many overweight people using the "it's genetic" excuse to not even try. If you lock a person in a room with no food and leave them there, they will lose weight.
So unless you believe that psychological forces in certain people will "force" them to consume to much food and not exercise, being overweight is a choice. The only way people start losing weight is if they first believe they have the option too. I never said it's an easy thing to do. In fact, it is incredibly hard sometimes (believe me I know).
Now as for judging people by their weight, I try not to do that. But I freely admit that I find a fit person of healthy weight more attractive than a very heavy one. I don't think that makes me some sort of weight bigot. I'm not going to ostracize someone because they are overweight though.
Ah well, I've probably annoyed someone by this post. If so, I'm sorry about that. I did not mean too.
Rosie's homosexuality vs Elisabeth's conservatism
I'll might have to setup TIVO for this.

Yeah, what ehusen just said is basically how I feel. And I'm fat myself, so using the same principle as black comedians and rappers using the N word, I can and do occasionally call fat people fat. :) It is annoying when some people try to make it seem that it's physically impossible for fat people to not be fat. It's very simple (yet not usually easy) - consume fewer calories than you burn!
Didn't Rosie just recently go after Star Jones for denying having gastric bypass surgery (pretending to lose all of the weight just by diet and exercise)?

You can inherit a propensity for fat in that your metabolism is slower than the average and that you more easily accumulate fat cells...BUT
The physics is simple, if you eat more calories than you burn, you put on weight. Fat people need to eat less and be more active. Active yet fat people are simply eating too much or consuming too much of high calorie, fat content foods. It's a choice. A choice that's harder for those with a genetic propensity to accumulate fat more easily but still a lifestyle choice.

Your post was fine I was just teasing Phil for basically saying the same thing as you did 4 posts earlier, but perhaps a little more succinctly. ;)

They've managed to get a woman whose show I've never watch to join the hosts of another show I never watch. Why did I even read this thread? :)
And by the way, fat jokes are funny in the same way it would be funny to make fun of someone who's wearing ugly clothes (and there can be some funny jokes made about both those things :)). Just because someone has a choice doesn't mean they should be ridiculed for that choice with the excuse "well, if they don't want to be ridiculed they should change".

Better yet. You have no choice what race you are, fat is a choice.I don't like that either, because it implies that there's something wrong with being black, but we have to excuse it because they have no choice.

If it is a choice, its one that's none of your damn business, not a subject for mockery or derision.
And what point are you trying to make? If people could choose their own race, then the watermelon jokes would suddenly be ok?

I really can't stand the "big and beautiful" BS. So long as you are healthy, that is what should matter. I have a hard time believing many "big boned" people are healthy. That certainly doesn't suggest that "skinny" or "normal" people are, just that it is easier to detect, visually, that an obese person is running higher risks at certain ailments.
That being said:
I agree, we need to stop accepting the jokes about fat people
&
Can we all please stop with the politically correct stuff all the d@M4ed time???

Mocking is usually impolite, in this case the public figure has made issue of her public figure, and her career is based, in part, on her image.
And what point are you trying to make? If people could choose their own race, then the watermelon jokes would suddenly be ok?
While I can't speculate about the point the other person was trying to make (though it is rather obvious), your interpretation is a joke on a couple of levels.
