View Full Version : American Idol "Billboard Top 10" Predictions - who will sing what?

So... looking at the Billboard charts, and assuming that they're allowed to pick from the top 10 on any Billboard chart... who do you think will sing what?
Here is a good link to many of the charts:
http://today.reuters.com/news/newsEntertainmentCharts.aspx?type=billboardCharts
(I say most, because I notice that, glaringly, Christian AC is not featured.)
Looking at the charts, even I have trouble making a prediction. I have this feeling next week is going to be another trainwreck week.

Hah, I was just listening to Temperature on XM this morning and I was laughing to myself trying to imagine someone on Idol trying to sing it.
I vaugely remember in Rock Star last fall someone was trying to sing something with "a lot of words" as the judges put it... I can't remember exactly what the song was. I think it was Aerosmith. They did OK overall but messed up a few times.

Anybody gonna sing Bad Day? Probably not.
Taylor or Elliot might sing You're Beautiful, though. Depends on whether or not they want to have two weeks of a softer song or not.

Man, popular music is horrible these days. Next week has the potential to suck even harder.

I wonder if Katharine or Paris will try Kelly Clarkson. I know that went over like a lead balloon last time someone did one of her songs.
I need to listen to the radio more, I hardly know any of these songs! :(
Addendum:
OK On the adult contemporary list I know these:
You're Beautiful - Elliot
Bad Day - Taylor
You And Me - Chris
Because Of You - Katharine
From the Latin Chart:
Hips Don't Lie - Paris teehee

This reminded me that I had seen a category "Billboard Charts" on iTunes, and thought I'd check it out and listen to some current popular songs (I almost never listen to the radio, so I have no clue what's popular right now). Turns out the charts they have are three from 2004?? Uh... are mine not refreshing, or are they just not updating these anymore?

I tried the same thing last weekend and got the same results. Maybe the deal expired.
Also, no Hot A/C chart on that Reuters link.
Ace would have sung "You're Beautiful," all in falsetto. Too bad he's gone. Not.
Nobody will dare sing "Bad Day." That's more of an invitation to get booted than singing "Another One Bites the Dust" during Queen week.
Chris might try "No Way Back" by the Foo Fighters (Modern Rock chart). Though I would like to hear Ryan Seacrest say "singing 'Crazy Bitch,' here's Chris Daughtry."
The others are soul or R&B type singers, and there isn't much of that stuff on the chart now. Even the R&B chart is mostly Rap. Nobody's gonna touch Natasha Bedingfield's song. Randy already said he hated it when Ayla Brown sang it.
Rhianna's SOS is a decent track, but probably not a vocal powerhouse, and Katharine and Paris aren't right for it.

My main wish list is for someone to tackle a Rob Thomas song. Probably won't happen, though.
I could also see Elliot or Taylor doing either Bad Day or You're Beautiful. I did not like Ace, but would not You're Beautiful have been perfect for him?
Other songs I would like to see performed from the Charts:
Pop 100:
Kelly Clarkson Walk Away.....love this song. I would die if Kat did it.
Pop 100 Airplay:
Hips Don't Lie.....again, Kat, but she would never try it, I don't think.
Unwritten is there too, but since Ayla already got bounced with it, I doub't anyone would try again.
Hot Country Songs:
The Bon Jovi/Jennifer Nettles duet version of Who Says You Can't Go Home is on this chart. Taylor could do it. Chris could do it. Kat could do it too as her voice has range similar to Jennifer Nettles.
There's other good country artists on the top 10 of this chart too, including Tim McGraw, Keith Urban, Brooks and Dunn, LeAnn Rimes, Dierks Bentley, Faith Hill, Rascall Flatts, etc.
Adult Contemporary:
Has Faith Hill's Like We Never Loved at All. That would be another good one for Kat.
Regarding the "from the year you were born" song..........I think this provides a leg up for Taylor. As the oldest in the group (right?), there is so much available to him that is right up his alley, assuming clearance can be obtained.....Seger....Eagles.....etc.

It would be funny if someone sung Bad Day and got voted off.
Edit: Triple Smeek with a twist.

I will volunteer ;)
Daniel Powter sang Bad Day on Ellen yesterday. This really is a good song. If Taylor does it, he will really need to bring it down a few keys to better fit his lower range. Elliot may very well be able to do a good job with it.
Of course, as said above and in the main post (I think), who in their right mind would sing a song on Idol that references having a bad day........paging Mr. Murphy!

Um, you do know that it's not just the lyrics themselves that would be an invitation to get you booted, don't you?
Everyone knows that "Bad Day" is the song they play on the results show every week, when they recap the "journey" of the eliminated contestant, right?

Doh! I am such an idiot!!
Then again, if one of them thought they could knock it out of the park, I think they would get a lot of props from the judges for doing it. But it would have to be perfect. Then again, any current Top 10 song is going to have to be perfect since we have all heard them on the radio so much lately.......Sort of like the Kelly Clarkson comments Simon made to Lisa.......

I am totally unfamiliar with Christian music. Why do they bother with two charts if the same songs are on both charts in almost the same order?

The Billboard Christian charts are quite limited, unfortunately. The A/C chart surveys 39 "reporters," stations playing an A/C format. The Top Singles surveys the same 39 reporters, plus adds an addition 9 stations playing a Top 40 format.
The result is that Top Singles might include a "hotter" mix of music, music that would normally be found on a CHR or even a Rock station.
