I think the Humax 40-hr Tivo I bought Nov 04 is broke. I cannot watch live tv. The screen is black fuzzy, but the channel information is there. All of the tivo menus work and I can still access and watch anything I have already recorded. I just cannot watch or record live tv. I checked the cable box by plugging it in directly to the tv and it works fine. I did notice that when I powered off the Tivo and then plugged it back in that the screen for live tv went from black to a blurry green where you could sort of make out some of the picture. Also after I turned it back on, I "heard" it running and then while I was back behind the tv checking all the connections, the Tivo stopped making any noises - I think a fan or whatever it is in the Tivo that makes noise, just stopped. Any thoughts about what could be happening?
Anyway, I called Tivo to cancel my service because I'm figure the Tivo is probably broke and I do not want to sink anymore money in a single tuner Tivo. Besides, I have a dual tuner dvr/HD receiver from my cable company that I now use mainly for all of my tv recording/viewing.
When I called Tivo to cancel, they encouraged me to wait until next week to call back because: 1) my account was paid up until the 6th; and 2) they are offering some exciting new promotions next week.
I love my Tivo, but I get what I need from my dual tuner HD cable dvr for less money. And, I am not ready to spend $99 on the new Series 2 with dual tuners AND a monthly fee because I already have the cable dvr (I don't really need two dvr's). Tivo may offer more services than my cable box, but the only feature they offer that I really use is the home media option/networking capability. However, for me personally, the HMO is not worth the extra expense for my purposes. Plus, if I replace the cable box with a Series 2 dual tuner Tivo, I'll lose HD tv.
Of course I will call back next week to find out what the "exciting new promotions" are, but unless I can get a new Series 2 dual tuner w/o a huge cash outlay, I think I may be a Tivo Dropout.
Also, FYI to Tivo, I am NOT a customer who is willing to fork out $500 -$900 dollars for a new Series 3. Especially not when the cable box I have was Free, and only cost a few dollars/month. Besides the HMO, what features will be on a Series 3 that make it worth that much money when the cable dvr does essentially everything that I need? IMO, HMO or the ability to program my Tivo remotely from the internet is not worth $500 (if in fact this is the cost of a Series 3).
Thoughts? Opinions? Am I missing something? Is there something that I'm not getting here? I agree that the Tivo software is unbeatable and I am aware that Tivo offers certain features that a cable dvr does not, but are those features really worth the extra expense? Somebody tell me why Tivo is better than a cable box when it costs so dang much more money.
