I have a TiVo in my bedroom and the fan noise is making me crazy. I can't put it in a closet because of a difficult cable situation...

I know that generally TiVo stays on all the time...so, am I going to do damage by turning it off each night so that I can sleep?

Otherwise, it's outta there...

Thanks!

Well, it won't be able to record anything if you totally turn it off each night by disconnecting its AC power. And that's rather stressful for the hard drive. You could try installing a quieter fan. They're available at http://www.weaknees.com

I have all 3 in my bedroom.
You get used to the noise, and it actually helps me sleep by masking outside noise.

Agreed,,you do get used to it and it acts as kind of a white noise generator...In fact I kind of missed it the night it was downstairs awaiting a new drive install

If it is a whiny, high pitched noise (instead of a low to medium hum) then either a new fan or just a good cleaning of the old one might make it better.

3 tivos in the bedroom? When do you ever sleep?

As a Network admin I work in a small room with 5 servers and 1 workstation all day and the fan on the Tivo is ultra quite compared to what I am around all day so it does not really bother me as others have said it is just a little white noise.

My wife had similiar complaints ... the combination of the Tivo and the CableCo box kept her up at night. My solution was to wire the TiVo (and box) from the Attic to the bedroom and install a wireless remote transmitter thingie.

Worked like a charm.

Is it really the fan noise that bothers you, or vibration? Our TiVo sits atop a large wood entertainment center, and was vibrating badly against the wood top. I ended up quieting it by using 4 high density closed cell foam bath toys, one as a foot at each corner. They're just soft enough to dampen the vibration, but hard enough that they don't deform noticably under the TivO and make good feet.

None actually.

Shared house, so all my TV watching is done in the bedroom, late at night after work.

I might donate the standalone once the series 3 comes out.
