Have they ever explained why Alexandra Cabot is back from witness protection? I have seen every episode of this series, nothing was said, and I thought they might have covered it when Stephanie March guested on "SVU" last year. but I just watched that on USA and that episode finished with her going back into witness protection! I cannot believe they just expect us to pretend it didn't happen. Have I missed something?

I haven't seen every episode of Conviction and I was wondering the same thing as well. Hopefully someone who has seen all the episodes can confirm if they addressed it. My guess is that they probably never said anything directly and we were just supposed to assume that she came out of Witness Protection and joined the ADAs office again.

Here is what NBC's site for the show says in the character bio section:

"After prosecuting a powerful and dangerous drug lord, she received numerous death threats. She pursued the case anyway, despite increased threats that included her mother. One night, while heading home, Cabot was shot. She was pronounced dead, but actually entered the Witness Protection Program.

She has now reemerged to guide a new crop of ADAs through the hectic and often dangerous New York legal system. She will work closely with Deputy D.A. Jim Steele to make sure cases are held to the letter of the law."

Actually, you have to assume a little, but also have to have seen an episode of Law and Order: SVU to understand. Either last season, or the season before, Alex left Witness Protection to testify against the crazy drug lord guy that she was running from. There was a little boy involved that had valuable testimony, but he was too scared to talk. Alex befriended him, and convinced him that testifying would be ok. The drug lord was convicted and locked away forever, so with Alex back in New York, you have to assume that the threat to her life was over.

Hope this helps!

Drug lord was convicted, locked up, so presumably the threat went away and it was decided that she was safe to return to NY for good.

There's been no actual explanation on the show but I read an article a while back, can't find it now of course, where NBC says that there will be an episode that explains it.

Maybe season finale?

That is the episode I referred to in my original post. You must've missed the final scene, where the cast is waiting for Cabot and the little boy to join them. Dann Florek enters and says they will not be coming as the Feds have placed both of them back in witness protection. It was NOT the drug lord that was convicted, it was his hit man.

Thanks for trying to help!

Funny, I have watched every episode of Conviction and love it. I had no idea one of the characters existed before this show.

Not only was the drug lord not convicted, IIRC he was the defendant in one of the trials in the first episode of Conviction and he walked becaus Cabot forced the ADA handling the case to make a deal.

Sorry ;), I messed up and said it was the drug lord instead of the hit man--but the crux of my post remains the same (i did indeed read the orignal post), and I do remember the last scene where they were returned to WP. Since it's tv land, and unaware that an episode was planned to explain her return, I figured we were left to assume what happened. That's what I get for thinking and sharing I guess! Anyway, if the explanatory episode mentioned by someone earlier is aired, I hope it answers your questions--and that it's done in an interesting, not hokey way.

who sang the song at the end of the episode? (during the last 5 minute montage)
