So I have read about the zipper. I have been envious of those who have zippered. But when it comes to linux and a lot of the technical stuff I have read on the zipper related threads, I have no clue. I have never used it, seen it, touched it.
Can anyone share their experience or offer some advice to someone like me who has no linux experience but wants to unleash the power of his Series II DirecTivo? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

It's really pretty easy if you follow the zipper guide. You'll end up with a Linux boot CD, and a 'zipper' tools CD. Just follow the guide, making sure you have the hard drives jumpered properly. That's probably the most difficult part of the process since each drive manufacturer has their own cryptic way of illustrating which jumper setting is for master or slave.

If you've never upgraded a Tivo before and you're primarily just looking for for more recording time, then I suggest installing a larger hard drive using the Hinsdale instructions here http://www.newreleasesvideo.com/hinsdale-how-to/index9.html and a bootCD containing MFSTools 2. If you want to make a backup of your old Tivo drive and save all settings EXCEPT SHOWS, then you'll need a FAT32 drive and at least 3 GB of free hard drive space. If you use the Hinsdale instructions, then you can save a lot of time by doing a restore and expand in a single step (step 8) and skipping steps 9 and 10 entirely.
