Well that cop bit the dust and so did the younger asian kid which I was calling his demise a while ago.

Good Episode!
What was up with the ring? Did someone pawn the original, like the deadbeat dad in Hawaii?
You have satellite cell phones, you don't have a way to track your kid's cell phone?
You are a master thief, you cut a lock versus picking it?

Judging from the way these Thief threads get so little activity, I guess there's only a handful of us watching it. Which is really puzzling as this is a great show.
Except for not having enough containers, the operation went off pretty much without a hitch. Very smooth. Unfortunately, I think they left too many clues behind. The getaway is definitely not going to go as well as the heist.
I'm not sure I care for the daughter storyline. It just doesn't seem to be going anywhere. As for the ring, I think the pawn broker was scamming her. Having dealt with pawn brokers in the past, there is no way that one would give up $300 for a "paste" ring. It's a real emerald, and he just wanted to get her price down. (Of course that is only what would happen in real life. In TV land I guess its possible that a pawn broker could feel sorry enough for a stranger to give her $300.)
Can't believe next week is the season finale. I hope we don't have to wait until next Spring for the next season. Hey FX, you could run TWO good shows at one time ya know. There's no rule that this show or the Shield, or Rescue Me, couldn't run at the same time.

You are a master thief, you cut a lock versus picking it?I didn't think he cut the lock, he cut the side of the container. IIRC, the idea is to make it look like nothing happened.

He cut the lock, that's why he had to replace it. My guess is that it is not as easy to pick those locks as one would think.
What clues did they leave behind? The only one was the fake cop pulling over the food station and the guy missing work at the same time.
I thought that was a scam as well at the pawn broker. Somehow I doubt it will matter in the grand scheme of things - with $20 mil I am sure they can scrounge up the thousand or two the guy will charge.

I saw the Cutting of the Lock as two things:
Expediecy of the Heist. Was probably editing, but they didnt seem to have a lot of time to spare.
By replacing it wth a Lock the Marshalls didn't have a key to, it bought them even just a few minutes in escape time.

He rolled up the fabric side of the outer container, then he cut the lock on the actual container that the money was in, then replaced that lock with his own lock. Which is why the federal agent's key didn't work. They just didn't expect anyone to check it until it reached Columbia.

I agree with this.
I was also hoping someone could remind me. How did the cop find out that Nick (Andre Braugher) was in on that San Fran job? Was it when he beat up the "councilor"?

My theory on running down Nick by the corrupt cop: He got a hit about the member of Nick's crew coming back from San Francisco after the $2M heist. Once he had the guy ID'd he tracked known associates. Or just tracked the guy back to Nick car dealership.
When he beat up the councilman, he said you tie me to a double homicide, who did I gve the information to? When it was the Chinese Mob, he put it together with SF Bank job.

Another thing about the lock, Nick and the other guy are talking and Nick says $40M and they protect it with this and laugh. I agree he didn't think anyone would be checking it until arrived in Columbia.

I missed the first three episodes of Thief but I've heard good things. I have the last two episodes on my Tivo, but I'd like to see the first three episodes before I watch them. Anyone know when/if FX is replaying these episodes?

The pawnshop guy was definitely scamming the girl. As someone else stated, no one would give her $300 knowing it was paste.

...and I have a feeling he's not going to enjoy his inevitable meeting with Step-Daddy! (Although with only one episode left, he might get to put it off for a season...)

I'm really hoping that they renew this show. It is great to see Braugher back in action. Strange thing... it seems that Braugher's character has similar moral underpinning as his Homicide character, even though in this show he is a no-doubt bad guy.
The daughter storyline seems uneven, though for some reason I like her character. In the previous episode, it seemed that she was coming around until he dumped her off at the stranger's house.
When the pawn shop guy saw what he had, I knew he wasn't going to offer fair value. Hopefully, "stepdad" will get a chance to "intervene" next episode.

I don't think it will be renewed. I just read that the rating are pretty bad, for whatever reason.

This show is good but the job is done , now it will be all about them trying not to get caught by the cops. Wonder what is gonna happen when they get back to the shop to find 1 dead cop and 1 dead asian assassin. The daughter is so tired now with all her crap
waaaaaaa I am not going in the same direction as you but I love you waaaaaa!!!
who cares!!
she is just there to bring out his more loving side which will get him into trouble
who knows
good show though

Given that there is still another episode to watch, I'm finding the Chinese mob angle to the story more and more unbelievable as we go. I mean, they got their money back, right? Why are they hunting them down to kill them still? It makes no sense...

The whole point is to intimate others who might think of doing the same thing in the future. Think about it: They didn't know they were ripping off the Chinese mob, and when they realized it, the reaction was pretty much, "Oh S%!T!!"

Yeah, it's a pretty old motif in gangster movies--people accidently rip off the mob, and when they find out, no matter how hard they try they can't make it right because all the mob cares about at that point is making an example out of them.
And there's always that "Oh S%!T!!" moment when they realize what they've done...

Well, I never "got" the motivation. It's only a minor nit, but I can see where it turned viewers off. The motivation was never explained well enough, IMHO.

They probably assumed that everybody has seen enough gangster movies/shows to have seen it a hundred times, and thus not need an explanation beyond what was given (which certainly said it all, albeit in bare-bones fashion).
I guess it's an improvement for a show to assume we've seen others of its ilk before, over assuming we're just a bunch of cultural blanks who have never seen anything before, which is what some shows do! It's a balancing act, and I think they can be forgiven for tottering a little once in a while. And I'd rather they totter on the side of thinking we know something rather than thinking we don't.
