I have an RCA DVR40 (DirecTV series 2) and tried to use mfstools 2.0 to copy the data from the original 40 GB drive to a new 160GB drive. Progress stops several times, then at 56% complete displays "Internal error 3.s" and quits. I tried doing a dd to copy blocks but that receives lots of IO errors.

My motiviation for doing this is that I think my original hard drive has bad blocks and may be going. Operationally the TIVO still seems fine, though.

How can I upgrade the unit and/or save my data?

Thanks in advance for any help.

there is a Linux command dd_rescue that does a binary copy ignoring errors, other then that I have had really good luck with SpinRite from http://grc.com the US$ 90 is a little costly and there is no guarantee that it can recover the bad data.

dd_rescue did the trick, and then I used mfsadd to add the remaining space on.

So I have a 140 hours, new drive, and all my old content. Thanks for your help!
