Ok, here's the situation - my sister had an S1 Philips DTivo that was having heat problems; I suspect that it was just the fan was shot. So, I called DTV and they sent her a nice refurb DSR708 and told us to pitch the S1, which we have not yet done.

Then there's my brother, who also has an S1 Philips DTivo. He's having the problem that the system reboots, the picture pixelates, and all the other symptoms of a bad hard drive. He's called DTV and he knows he can get a replacement for $14.95, but it would require an additional 2 year commitment (according to the CSR), which he'll do if he has to, but doesn't want to.

Now, the question is, can I take the HD from my sisters old unit, plop in in my brothers unit and go without having to go through DTV? In an ideal world, I'd like to just do an HD transplant, button but box up, go through guided setup to get the zip and such set right, and go. I *think* this should work this way, but the one concern I have is that the HD is somehow associated with the access card ID or somesuch.

I'm no expert.. but I think an HD swap followed by a Clear & Delete everything from the TIVO menus.. should set the new drive up comfortable in the other unit.

Yes, lajohn27 is correct. Provided the DVRs are the same brand/model you can take the good hard drive from your sister's DVR, install it in your brother's DVR, and perform a "Clear and Delete Everything" to re-initialize that disk drive in your brother's DVR.

I thought that would be the case, but I wanted to check before I let him know - didn't want to get his hopes up. Thanks for the feedback folks, it's appreciated.
