I have an old series 1 Phillips Tivo. It uses an IR emitter to tell the DirectTV box to change channels. Until recently this all worked ok. But then I had to upgrade my H-10 reciever to the new H-20. Since then, the emitter is no longer able to change channels as before.

Has anyone else seen this?

Any tips as to how to fix it?

I called Tivo - they won't support me as my tivo is a Phillips. They said to call Phillips. SHAFT #1

I called Phillips - they want $19.95 from me before they will even hear my question, with no guarantee of a solution. SHAFT #2

I don't want to upgrade to a newer Tivo because Tivo refuse to transfer my lifetime subscription that I purchased years ago. Aparently they don't understand the true meaning of the word 'lifetime'. SHAFT#3

Is thr h20 set to RF? It needs to be set to IR to accept commands from the emitter.

I noticed that the term lifetime often refers to the "lifetime" of the product line if it is discontinued it is effectively "dead".

That being said the H20's IR reciever is overly sensitive. They apparently are trying to compansate for something as simply slapping on an emitter floods out the reciever and you guessed it : nothing happens.
The sweet spot seems to be if you hold the stick on type emitter 6 " away a off to one side ( off axis) or as we have found with some of our equipment you can add a 680 ohm resistor inline with the signal to the emitter (RadioShack catalog #271-1117) or you can try placing the emitter 1 to 1.5 inches from the window.

Hopefully this can help others as well

TiVo understands the meaning of "lifetime" - unless you bought lifetime service prior to January 20, 2000, it meant "life of the box" and was not transferable. TiVo has had occasional offers to transfer lifetime status if you buy a new box.

I'll comment that this forum section is for boxes that combine a DirecTV receiver and TiVo, which is apparently not what you have.
