I have a 540xxx model series 2 whose original 40GB drive died recently. I bought a new 300 GB Seagate and InstantCake and configured the drive. Everything worked great.

The Seagate drive is fairly loud during seeks so I wanted to replace it with a quieter drive. I bought a supposedly very quiet 300GB Samsung drive.

I pulled the Segate and using dd copied the Seagate to the Samsung. It took 2-3 hours and at the very end there was an error indicating that the Samsung had one less block? than the Seagate and the last block failed to copy. As you might expect the TiVo would not boot with the Samsung.

Any ideas for copying the data - including recordings - to the Samsung drive?

Thanks

If you can decrease the size of the swap partition? Then use the piped MFSTools backup | restore with a slightly smaller swap partition.

You need to lose recordings, or get a drive with a couple more sectors.

Another option is to TTG backup to the Samsung (formatted to NTFS), copy those recordings to the Seagate drive (also formatted to NTFS), image the Samsung drive anew with Instantcake, and the TTG transfer back.

Thanks for the help. I'm leery of reducing the size of the swap partition. I'll transfer the shows to another TiVo, backup | restore the O/S and setttings to the Samsung and then pull the shows back.

Thanks for your help.
