Hi,

I got a used TiVo that was already setup for network access and have been using it happily for ages, but have never felt the need to access it over the network.

With the arrival of a second TiVo and a few problems with that it forced me to play about with networking and I now want more!

Sadly I have no idea of the original ip adderss of the first TiVo. Is there any way I can find it out or reset it?

Thanks
Marc

Is the TiVo on your network? If so - look at your router's configuration - theres usually a page on the router which details which devices are connected to it - and usually this gives the IP Address, MAC address etc etc.

many routers only show those connected via DHCP which tivo doesn't use...

download a "network ip scanner" program on your PC, and it'll find it.

e.g.: http://www.angryziber.com/ipscan/

Press ip, then classC or classb (slower) then start

I've recently had to do this - too lazy to take the disk out! I tried a scanner (using Angry IP scanner as I had it on the machine already) but got slightly odd results. Also if you have to do a full scan then it can take for ever.

In the end I downloaded Ethereal from the website of the same name - and set it logging the port which the tivo was attached to using a crossover cable. In a fairly short time it came up with a message in the logs something like 'Who is 10.0.1.1 - tell 10.0.1.201'. This showed that the tivo was at 10.0.1.201, and was looking for a gateway at 10.0.1.1.

Thereafter it was easy to telnet to 10.0.1.1 and re-run nic_config_tivo to get it onto my network.

Just another option which is worth considering if you have to do this.

Cheers,

Dave

Well the above answers your question but it reminds me that I did experiment with a utility on my tivo disk images that allowed you to key in codes on the remote and do certain things, one of them being to display your tivo ip on screen.

I scrapped it though because it had a tendancy to irraticly execute the commands after a daily call, never did get to the bottom of why the daily call interferred with it !?!?

I use this utility: http://www.lookatlan.com/ . Scans in a few seconds and will tell you what is on your network. Great little tool!
