I had an idle thought the other day regarding daily calls.

Do Tivo actually upload any data from our units during the daily calls or is it solely used to download the listings and set the clock?

Do they use any user specific information regarding the thumps up/down selections or pass on what has been recorded to any companies that collate the viewing figures?

Just curious really.
Cheers.

I seem to recall that there is a clause in the contract that allows them to collect 'non-identifiable' information on viewing habits and stuff, but don't know for certain if they actually do this and what they collect if they do.

One for Ozsat or Gary, I think :)

I believe they do, because I remember TIVO putting out a press release at the time that the Janet Jackson Superbowl incident that it was the most replayed moment on TIVO ever.

I understand that they do not collect programme data from the UK - although some data is collected if there are reports of problems with a particular unit. This would be the log data.

Judging by the log files, which record the various sendings and receivings in extraordinarily dull detail, they don't. Only ~3k of dtaa is sent, identifying the machine to TiVo.

The UK Privacy Policy can be found here (http://www.tivo.co.uk/5.11.asp) - I've not read it (recently) and may help.

It's annoying because it means we're stuck with data from x years ago when TiVo started in the UK to work out suggestions. ...though given the quality of the some of the programme metadata for genres etc maybe it doesn't make any difference :p
