It Can Be Done!

OK I could have sworn I had a Pioneer DVR-108.. turns out its a DVR-A07
(note: The difference between A07 and 107, or A08 and 108, is pretty much retail distribution).

Well, I just upgraded the hard drive in my DRT800 and figured I'd throw my DVR-A07 in and see what happens. I picked this up at Micro Center maybe a year and a half ago for my PowerMac.

Put it in, powered up, crossed my fingers and prayed I'd done the hard drive upgrade right, and everything looked good. Selected 2 programs to burn to DVD....

and wouldn't you know, it did it! Hooray! We now have one "officially" compatible DVD-RW drive for our Humax TiVos!

Here are some photos as proof. Also of note, I'm on version 7.2.2 of the TiVo software (7.2.2-oth.01-2-595) and I used a Verbatim DVD-R "inkjet printable" disk (rated at 16x i think). The burned disc played fine in my Sony DVD player.

See it burn:

I apologize for the lesser image quality of the final 4 photos - my digital camera's batteries died and I had to use my phone :b

Now that I've done it, I'd be curious to see if anyone else can too! Got a DVD-RW drive laying around? Hook it up and see what happens!

Hmmm - I wonder if a Dual Layer DVD-RW drive would work? And, take advantage of the Dual Layer media? Oooo a worthy upgrade if it does!

thats cool. i'd love to have something like that, but the price is just not right for me. i might get a dvdrw stand alone from target or something when they are around $70.

so, did you try burning a dvd-rw disk in it? cool, thanks for the pix

I only tried the DVD-R... I was just excited I didn't bork my hard drive upgrade (c:

Downside to that drive is that the A07 is slower than the 108, so I didn't keep it that way - but at least if I break it I know I can replace it with something!

Okay, here's a dumb question, but I have to ask. The picture where you show the DVD drive on top of the Humax, and burning, that's not how you kept it, right? You put it in the case, replacing the other DVD drive with it? (At one point when I was running a BBS, and I came across a hard drive that was enormous, I did run it outside the computer box, but I know I couldn't get away with anything like that these days, not with my daughter's Humax!)

Anyhow, this is indeed TERRIFIC news, and I thank you for sharing it. I've already designated your post a keeper, and have tucked it away in a nice little pdf file for if and when I need it.

Okay here's what I did... this was just an experiment, while I had the box open, so nothing was meant to be permanent.

I left the original DVD drive in there. Didn't unscrew it, pull it out, etc. Just left it in there. I unplugged the power and data cables.

I took my PowerMac's DVD drive (the one I bought at the store months ago) and just placed it on top - the cover was still off - and I just plugged in the power and data cables.

I powered up the TiVo, and tested it this way. Original drive was still in there, just not plugged in. Once I knew it worked, and I was ready to close up, I unplugged the PowerMac drive, reconnected the Original drive, put the cover back on, and put my stuff back.

I could have replaced the original drive, but since this was just a test I didn't go that far.

Fry's/Outpost has the Pioneer DVR-710, search for product 4806290,
on sale until Saturday (3/31) for $30 after a $15 rebate. The DVR-710 is supposed to be a clone of the DVR-111DBK.

Both the DVR-111 and the DVR-112 seem to be good replacements for the Humax DVD drive.

Edit: Rebate extended until 7/31/2007

DVR-111 is at MicroCenter for $60 with a $20 rebate. Installed it and it worked fine for me.
