I just got a 160 Gig upgrade kit from weaKnees and installed it in my Wifes' Samsung Sir S4040R and now I get no picture at all (boy is she Pissed).
I followed their instructions to the T, buttoned it all back up connected it. The drives spun up the fans started the power light even came on, and I didn't even gat so much as a welcome screen.
I tried checking the drives with powermax, Mfs tools reported the correct drive sizes (I didn't create a backup image) I even tried the Green screen of death fix, I kept it in the stream for 30Hrs. over the weekend and still got nothing.
Waiting for an answer from weaKnees, but thought I give you guys a try too.
I gotta do something, I'm tellin ya she's pissed, Hell I'm afraid to go to sleep at night
Any advice would be great.

You didn't bump the front panel ribbon cable did you?
That's the only thing I've seen in all the instructions as really bad if you do.

You get nothing?
Additional drive....Master/Slave jumpers set correctly?

If you don't get the "Welcome, Powering up" screen then it's probably the ribbon cable phox points out. The welcome screen is just the boot prom doing it's thing - "A few more minutes" is the start of disk boot.

Just how sensitive are those robbons anyway? I made sure I didn't touch the front panel ribbon and even double checked it before I lowered the twinbreeze bracket into place. As for the jumpers, I set the original A drive to master and didn't touch the jumpers on the new B drive as per the instructions.
Everything I read on this kind of upgrade sure made it sound simple. And I'm not really new at this kind of thing, I've built a few computers of my own from the case up.
Thanks and keep the Ideas coming!!

Doesn't sound to serious. Sounds exactly like a jumper issue on the drives. Make sure the main drive is set to master and the second drive is set to slave. I had the same problem when I wasn't paying attention.
You will need to change the second drive to slave. Its not sure which one to boot from at the moment........Instructions are wrong sometimes....

Ok, I checked the drive jumpers again. The original A drive (western digital) was set to master with a slave present and the new B drive (Maxtor Quickview) had a jumper across the top 2 pins horizontal (not jumped) but I completely removed it. Sticker on drive says "no jumper * slave" plugged it back in and still nothing.
Please don't tell me it's the ribbon. How can you test for that?
Honest, I didn't disturb the darn thing!
What's next???? I'm begging for the solution.

put the jumper on the second drive as "slave". The jumper defintely needs to be on there or you will get the same problem as you see now. Jumper across the top pins or removed is the same. Put the jumper as "slave" according to the diagram listed on the drive. I have upgraded plently of tivo's and slightly bumped the white cable......its not that sensitive, but you just need to make sure you didn't dislodge it. Im sure your okay....just get that pin on right and you should be set

I double checked the drives diagram and it clearly shows no jumper=DS(slave) so I put the jumper across the top pins closest to the IDE cable. But that's where it was from the start. The Western Digital WD400 (original A drive) the jumper is on the center two pins indicating Master with slave present, again as it was from the start.
weaKnees got back to me and are saying it's a mother board or power supply problem.
Anything else to try?

MB or PS problem? BS.
I'd try putting the new drive in a PC and booting the PTVUpgrade LBA CD.
Step one, make sure your PCs BIOS "sees" the new drive.
Step two, run 'pdisk' from the PTV CD against that HD and see what it says.
Have you tried booting the Tivo without the 2nd drive? If you indeed have a MB or PS problem, then booting with just the WD400 would exhibit the same problem. I doubt it does.

As someone pointed out previously, you don't need any drive connected to get the grey 'Welcome. Powering up...' screen. That's in the boot prom. Disconnect both drives from the motherboard, and power up. You should get the powering up screen. If you just have a black screen, then you do have a powersupply or motherboard problem. If you get the welcome screen, then make sure your cables are plugged in the correct way (the red stripped end of the ribbon cable should be closest to the power connector on the HD end) Make sure the power cables from the power supply or properly seated on their connectors on the motherboard.
As for the front panel white ribbon cable- if you did knock it askew, and short out the pins, it burns out the IR receiver circuit. The Tivo will still boot up, and function, but the remote won't work. In many cases, the front panel buttons still do.

Wolffpack:
One of the first things I tried was to put things back to original and start it up. I did get the same problem. I just can't figure out what I could have done to cause this.
The only thing I can think of is that the PS was on it's last leg already (my wife runs the s**t out of this thing) and the added load of the second drive did it in.
weaKnees sent me a link to a known dvr withe the same symptoms and the solution is a new PS.
I have one on order and I'll give it a try, they tell me I can return it if that's not the problem.
Thanks Guys
I'll let you know how I make out

The Dtivo power supply wasn't designed for 2 hard drives. Now, I know several members here have put in 2 hard drives in their units and ran them for years, but the fact is the power supply is problematic for more than 1 hard drive.
Once you replace the PS, I'd recommend just running a single large hard drive in the unit.

im no lawyer but how could they sell additional drives intended for a very specific use and not know the machines couldn't handle them? That would be outright unconscionable and certainly actionable since it's very easy to prove whats going on here.

I guess it doesn't really help you any but I got an upgrade kit from Weaknees 2 years ago and put in my DVR 40. That was before 6.2 so I only got a total of 157 hours. I'm considering upgrading again to get more time.
I had no problems and it took me less than 1/2 an hour to do. It fired right back up and has been running for 2 years this month with the upgrade 2nd drive.
I hope you get it worked out. From what I've seen Weaknees has great kits and I wouldn't hesitate myself to order another.
I have heard that if a failure on a TIVO is going to occur its likely to happen during reboot. Perhaps your unit was running uninterupted for a long time and whatever happened did so because of the reboot and not the extra drive. Doesn't help explain to the wife I know but its possible.

Ok if the original PS isn't up to the task of 2 drives and lets not forget the optional second cooling fan. Am I to believe that the new PS from weaKnees is any better?

Ok people, I got my new power supply and still nothing. I think I'm about to admit defeat.
I'm looking at some stuff on Ebay.
How hard is it or is it even possible to extract the video that is on the original hard drive and put it on a new drive or put it into my PC to burn a DVD?
