Activation Phone call for HD DVR service

I have no analog phone line (broadband Vonage-type only).

The D* install tech told me I could bring my HR10-250 to a neighbors with a regular phone line and make the initial call there.

I had set everthing up ok, but couldn't view the DVR menu to make the call. I know the cables were hooked up correctly because I saw the "powering up" message clearly.

Do I need to feed a SAT signal to the box in order to proceed?

No, but you need to push the Format button on the front panel to select 480i unless you have the box connected to a HDTV. Also, press the DirecTV button to skip to the menus while it is trying to find the satellite.

No sat signal is needed for setup so you should have no problems doing the initial call from a neighbor. And you should also be able to connect with VoIP. Do a search and you'll find several threads where people have it working - I don't have VoIP, so I can' t help.

thank you for the guidance. I hadn't set the format correctly. Problem solved!
Now enjoying the full Tivo functionality.
