View Full Version : Daily Call Problem over Net

I've not made a successful call (over the internet) since Sunday 2nd Apr at 07:11.

As far as I'm aware nothing has changed at my end. I did have a previous problem where the gateway was not correctly set, but I rectified that and made a successful calls since.

I've reboot my TiVo, and tried making the call manually via the TV and through the web interface too.

Error messages appear with both methods.

I get "Failed. Line unavailable" after the perparing to call and housekeeping messages.

Any suggestions please?

Sounds like your Tivo is failing to get to the outside world. I would check the gateway setting.
The best way to make sure everything is in order would probably be to run the NIC Config utility again:

telnet {tivo ip address}

cd /sbin

./nic_config_tivo

check settings, make appropriate changes, 0 to exit and re-write settings.

If there was anything adrift, this script should re-write the settings and cure.

I've re-run the config and reconfirmed the gateway address, and then rebooted the Tivo as advised.

However I'm still gettgin "Failed. Line unavailable"

from the telnet session I can ping 143.166.224.178 (dell's web address)

but can't resolve a ping to dell.com

Should I be able to resolve names from the Tivo?

Whats the address to which the Tivo should try and connect?

The Nic_config_tivo is set to:-

Current/New Configuration:
timing setting = optimal
mac address = 00:0B:AD:40:13:D8
ip address = 192.168.0.201
ip subnet mask = 255.255.255.0
ip gateway = 192.168.0.99
debug level = off
daily call = network

If I turn the debug on where will is be able to see the log file?

IIRC, DNS lookups don't work on TiVo. You can ping IP addresses, but not names.

Which ISP are you using, btw?

erm, I'm thinking it's nothing wrong at your end mine last made it's daily call over the net on the 2nd April at 11:09.

rebooted an nothing, checked and Tivo can access the outside world so not me :(

Over the net updates working fine here (despite MaxDSL's best attempts to break it... :p )

Same here, working fine.

Your ISP doesn't use a transparent proxy, does it? Or suddenly introduced one?

Just fixed it :) somebody had unpluged the phone cable... bit of a coincidence it died on the same day as the OP though.

Always thought it wierd that it needs the phoneline to update over the net

Always thought it wierd that it needs the phoneline to update over the net

It doesn't

My TiVo ( and at a guess everybody else with a network card and connection to the Internet ) doesn't have a phoneline connected.

It's more likely that your TiVo is still getting its updates via dial-up if unplugging the phone stops them.

Guys, I am having the same problem. What should the dial prefix be and any other for that matter to tell the tivo to use the internet via my cache card? Thanks...

Hi devicemanager - this is a UK forum, and as such we only have Series 1 machines with software version 2.5.5.

The ,#401 dial prefix doesn't work for any software < 3.0 AFAIK and so is no use to us at all, but I guess it might be useful for you.

Thanks man, I am using that prefix right now and not getting out. But I can not get the tivo to show up in my arp table on the router. I think it might be an ip issue, thanks for your help!

Ok - I'd guessed as much.

My ISP is PlusNet

At the moment I've fixed the problem by pluging the phone line back in. Despite the NIC_Config being set to network - its making the call via the phone line!!! I'll try running the config again to swtich over to phone and then back to NIC.

PlusNet works fine for me, and I believe Stuart is on them too. I guess that means it can't be that.

Despite the NIC_Config being set to network - its making the call via the phone line!!!Doesn't make sense! :p Have you checked rc.sysinit and rc.sysinit.author for duplicate entries and to see that all hacks are backgrounded?
