View Full Version : Hanging on start up

I have UK Tivo, that is hanging on start up, it stops at "nearly there, just a few more seconds".
I have tried the hard disk in another Tivo and it works fine.
I have unplugged and replugged all the cables in the unit.
I have checked the battery, ok at 3 volts.
I notice that the first screen " loading......" is quite clear, but when it switches over to the "nearly there......" it is very slightly pixelated, sort of frozen, (might mean something to someone out there).
All suggestions welcome.
Cheers

Try replacing the PSU, since they do wear out. They can be bought from Tivoland, com or other eBay sellers. There are some pretty cheap bundles that include spare remotes together with a PSU. They are quite crude, and the voltages can only be tested when under the correct load.

My money would be on the modem. If that's broken then the modem test program can hang... at "almost there...".
Have you had a powercut or thunderstorm recently?
Try the drive from your other TiVo and see if the same thing happens. If it does, then you can delete the modemtest file by putting the drive in a PC and booting from a linux CD - as described here (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?p=2821347&&#post2821347).

Thanks to both for suggestions, I will try the Modem test deletion first, see how we do after that.
As a note, the hard disk does spin up, or so it seems.

Kind Tivo community,
I have established that the modem has failed on my Tivo (UK Series 1).
My Tivo hung on startup, but after renaming modemtest to modemtest.old, the Tivo runs normally.
Any ideas how to introduce a modem to the unit. Or otherwise (seemlessly) get program guide data to the machine.
Thanks in advance.

It is possible (but can be very costly) to get the internal modem repaired.
External modems will not work with a UK TiVo.
My advice would be to get a network card and use broadband for your updates. You also get a few other benefits from networking too... ;) :)

My TiVo had a broken modem, so I had a similar issue. Got a Terbonet card on eBay for £29 or something and upgraded it for network updates. It's worked a treat ever since.
Obviously only an option if you have access to the Internet via a network connection (i.e. broadband).
I've gone on to upgrade my TiVo from 40Gb to 200Gb drives and add a few enhancements ;-)

Tartan_haggis,
Thanks, looks like that is the road I need to go down.
