View Full Version : What's better than a series 2?

I'm trying to decide what to do now. I bought a reconditioned series 2 from Tivo about 5 years ago and bought the lifetime subscription. We absolutely love it. I don't need to tell you how it has changed our lives. Anyway, I've been eyeing the new plasmas, lcd, etc. TV’s, but have decided to hold off until I can get a Tivo that would record at least 80 hours of HDTV. I would rather watch basic cable without commercials than HDTV with them.
Anyway, here is my dilemma. I had planned on purchasing a lifetime subscription with the new Tivo. Since I only have a week to activate a new lifetime subscription I am now scrambling to find something. Is there a box better than my series 2 that I should buy and get the lifetime? I know there are DVRs on the market, but I really, really like the 30-second skip feature.
Any suggestions? My wife thinks we should wait and buy and new Microsoft computer with built in DVR features.

S3 TiVo won't be out till well after lifetime availability is over.
Who knows, maybe they'll reinstate lifetime or something similiar with the S3.

Not really sure what you are asking.
You already have a Series 2 with lifetime. The only new box you'll be able to get lifetime on this week is the newer "nightlight" Series 2 (540 series), which of course isn't high def.
The Series 2 Dual Tuner model is rumoured to be out late May, but lifetime won't be available on it (except for rare circumstances). The Series 3 (which IS high def) won't be out until 3Q or 4Q and lifetime won't be available on it either (save for the same rare circumstances.
The best high def DVR on the market is the now-discontinued Sony DHG series. Far better than any of the cable offerings, no monthly subscription, but potentially problematic, depending on how you receive TVGOS data in your area. Very nice hardware, with some cool features, but the interface leaves a lot to be desired, compared to Tivo.

80 hours of HD is about 800GB or so. The S3 with external storage might get you near this. You can forget about lifetime for the S3 though, unless you snag a gift card.
But you are considering a PC, which is a power-hungry machine. We don't know the power draw of an S3 yet, but I'm willing to bet that it will be less than half of that of a PC with comparable abilities. Given that you already have a lifetime box, you'll only pay $6.95/month for the S3 (or, for most people $12.95/month), which is almost certainly less than the difference in electricity usage between the S3 and a PC with the "free" Microsoft service.

Seems unlikely. I bought my Series 1 standalone SVR-2000 at the end of Feb 01.
The first Series 2 unit was the AT&T Tivo that came out around 11/01. See http://archive.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3189.
