I am having the freezing/stuttering/reboot/slow response to basic commands DirecTV HD Tivo problem. The tech support said they would send out another as long as my signal strength on all transponders checked out.

My overall signal strength is 95+ on A and B and about 90 on C. But when I looked at transponders, some were either very low or even zero. Reading a few threads here it doesn't sound like this is a major issue. I just want to know before I tell DirecTV something and they try to act like there's a problem with my signal strength.

Thanks.

I can only discuss the 101 since that's all i'm familiar with:

make sure your weak channels are spot beams

http://www.widemovies.com/dtvtransponders.html

for example, in the philly area xponder 28 is pretty weak...around 20-40 (note 28 is not listed on that page)

if the xponders on that web page are weak, then you have a problem.

You will notice low or no signal on spotbeams not targeted to your area, and that is normal. You should only concentrate on your local spotbeams and CONUS x-ponders. If you are getting all of them at a strong level, you can disregard the rest. I believe the info to determine that is somewhere on this very forum, or on AVS.

I would also try to compare to OTA recordings. If there is also similar trouble with those you may have a HDD issue. If not, your problem is more likely in the sat reception itself (LNBF, aiming, multiswitch, sat tuners, etc.). The HDD and the decoders are the only things common to both OTA and sat. Otherwise the signal path is different.

Yeah, Tyrone it has happened on OTA recordings also.

I discussed the transponders with the 2nd Tier support and they said it was fine so they're sending me a replacement HD Tivo.. which will probably be broken also.

why so gloomy negative, dtv has over 100,00 hd tivos out there and most work fine. be happy they cover a full one year warranty and are sending another.

all those tivos..all that money...imagine what else we could do with all that money if each of us had waited and not paid 1K and got them virtually free last year :)

If you average the cost of 2 HD TiVo's, the cost is not so bad.

My first cost $900 + tax less DirecTV service discounts leaving about $500.

My sceond cost $400 + tax less DirecTV rebates and service discounts leaving about $100.

So the average cost for the 2 is $300.

My series 1 Sony SD DirecTiVos (I bought 2) average cost was $290 back in 2000-2001.
