i honestly can say i hear tivo on a tv show at least once a week. it's awesome. yeah it may be more expensive than others, it may not be perfect, but tivo will always be tivo, and i for one will always own one. tivo is premium, it's gonna cost a lot. tivo may be slow at getting stuff out the door for sure, but it gets it there eventually. go tivo.

I hear you brother. I feel the exact same way. No one is ever going to take away my Tivo, my betamax, or my apple Lisa computer. Nothing better will ever come along.

Nothing even close to a TiVo has come out yet. That's not to say it might not happen one day.

You would think with all that name brand recognition and 7 years of operating, they would be profitable at this point.
I like my tivos fine. I will use whatever is the best value and meets my needs. Reviewing the "improvements" TiVo has made to its product since I bought my first one, most of them are of no value to me. Heck most of them I am not even able to use.
The core functionality is the product for me. Recording shows and scheduling recordings. That is all I need my PVR to do. I do not care if it is made by TiVo or someone else.
TiVo has never done anything to make me feel like I owe them anything. I have paid them a SUBSTANTIAL sum of money over the last 7 years. If anything they owe me something. :)
I just do not get the mindset that you can not foresee yourself ever using a different PVR.

The two biggest things for tivo for me is simply the ease of use and the downloading to the computer part.

The question for the long term is, what major carrier will aquire TiVo...Comcast? Time Warner? Verizon, SBC?
I believe it's only a matter of time.

none of the above? why have the overhead of having to support developing their own hardware/software solutions when they can license them from another company that burned their own money on R&D + production? especially when you can pass on licensing cost to your customer?

At some point it makes sense to bring the software side in house. Those companies are already doing a lot along those lines with software. Hardware, now that's another story and I don't see that happening.

Actually Comcast paid TiVo $10M to port the TiVo software over to their deployed hardware platform. (I think it's a Motorola DVR) So they don't always put the R&D burden onto the developer.
