Fans of FX's original series won't have to wait too long between the finale of the network's newest show, "Thief," to the return of "Rescue Me" later this spring.

Four weeks, to be precise: FX says "Rescue Me" will begin its third season on Tuesday, May 30. "Thief," a limited-run series that will run six episodes this season, is scheduled to have its finale on May 2. Movies and other programming will fill the intervening weeks.

"Rescue Me" will have plenty of material to chew on in its new season. Last year's finale found New York firefighter Tommy Gavin (Denis Leary) a shattered man after the death of his son and several other members of his crew dealing with personal crises as well.

The season also ended with the Chief (Jack McGee) having to make a decision on care for his Alzheimer's-stricken wife, Franco (Daniel Sunjata) reeling from his breakup with Laura (Diane Farr, now on CBS' "Numb3rs") and Sean (Steven Pasquale) questioning his faith in the wake of Tommy's tragedy.

On top of it all, the crew was called to a building fire with people trapped inside.

Season two of "Rescue Me" averaged 2.8 million viewers per week, up slightly from its first go-round. It ended on a high note, drawing 3.6 million people to its finale. FX isn't spilling much about the coming season, but we do know that Susan Sarandon will guest-star in three episodes as a love interest for Franco.

That's too bad...hope it doesn't ruin the whole season with her presence....

I'm glad it's coming back soon, but I really wish they had cast someone besides Susan Sarandon.

Awesome news it is coming back a month sooner than I thought. I can't wait rescue me is one of the most underrated shows on TV. There are few shows that can have me laugh my ass off one minute then the next sick to my stomach the next.

 Yuck. I can't see how that could turn out to be anything but disgusting. (Sarandon turns 60 years old this October.)

Susan Sarandon isn't my favorite, but I'm gonna reserve judgement until I see it. I remember the same sentiments regarding Glenn Close joining The Shield (although it wasn't as a love interest...)

I am just now watching last season. I had them all saved up on my TiVo and finally pulled the trigger a few days ago. Of course that lead to a massive marathon where I watched half of them.. But I really am enjoying last season, more than the first season I think.

Doesnt Leary have a cop show he helped make coming too? It's called The Big Empty, it's being made for Spike TV, and it's from Leary's production company. Oh, and it's about corrupt cops.

Are we sure Sarandon isn't playing Franco's "mom" interest? Maybe I'm glad this show isn't on HBO. I'm not sure Sarandon butt would be any better than Paxton butt on Big Love.

Franco's mom has been on the show taking care of the little girl.

Maybe she will be Franco's therapist to help him get over the Diane Farr character?

Can't wait for the return!

Come on, Come on, Come on!

And I just got the CD by the Von Bondies called Pawn Shoppe Heart (they sing the theme song). Man, that's some cutting edge stuff.

I've seen every ep of this great show, and it's just as cutting edge as the music. I'm sure glad it's on FX, otherwise you know it would have to be dumbed down for network TV.

Too bad the sexy Diane Farr is now on Numbers. She and Franco had a great dynamic going.

I've quietly decided after rewatching the episodes that are airing, leading up to the new season, that Rescue Me might be the best show on TV. Better than The Shield, much better than the Sopranos.

Great, now I will have that song in my head for days! Good thing I like it so much. :D

For me, Rescue Me is probably second only to Veronica Mars. (I don't watch The Shield, but I think I may also prefer RM over The Sopranos.)

I love the theme song. I usually fast-forward through the openings on most shows, but that song gets me pumped up for the show. :)

Also agree on Diane Farr.

glad they decided to rerun them.

I had 2 more episodes to watch yesterday, there's 2 or 4 more this weekend too, wooo hooo. I can't believe how much cursing FX gets away with. You'd think it was HBO!!!
