I just bought a 45 inch Sharp Aquos 45 inch great HDTV...Had the Dish Network man come and hook up the satellite upgrade for HD. Everything works great except my TIVO. I am going through Tivo withdrawal. I am reduced to recording my shows on my laptop. I can't beleive TIVO is so short sighted as to be without HDTIVO. Does anyone have any suggestions? Please excuse me if this has been covered before, but I am new to this. :) Thanks in aadvance..

The only way you'll see a Tivo that records HD signals from Dish Network would be for Dish to contract out to have Tivo build a DVR/STB combo for Dish, or for Dish to license the Tivo software to build their own DVR.

Since both companies are sitting in a courtroom starting last week, suing each other over DVR patents, don't hold your breath...

tivo will have it's own hd unit the series 3 later this year. plenty of speculation over exactly when it will be released and how much. do a search to find out more. the dish hd unit should work fine for you if that's your choice. it is not the end of the world compared to a tivo.

To clarify:

The series 3 Tivo will only work with Over-the-air signals, or with your cable company.

It will not work with Dish or DirecTV.

I have had a series one Tivo and a series two Tivo for quite awhile. I recently switched over to Dish's HD offerings and at the same time switched over to the vip622 since Tivo did not offer a HD solution for me. I couldn't be happier with the 622. Being able to record 3 things at once while watching another is something I of course could never do with my Tivos. Don't get me wrong, I love Tivo, but for now the 622 is filling the bill quite nicely.

Do you mean this will not hook up and work properly with satellite units? Why not? The older TiVo's could communicate with them. Can you explain in more detail. Very interested.

The S3 Tivo's won't be able to control any external box, whether it is a cable box, a DBS receiver, etc. It can only 'tune' over-the-air signals (and maybe analog cable signals) and whatever can be decoded by a cablecard(s) that are inserted into the unit.

Result: Cannot be used with D* or E* HD receivers. This is an engineering/business decision by Tivo.

Older 'standard def' Tivos could take input via RF or composite video... they could also control satellite receivers via serial cable (a few D* receivers) or via IR blaster (most D* receivers and E* receivers).

Note: The above info is what I have gleaned in the forums here from discussions on the S3 Tivos.
