With Prison Break basically doing a flashback episode show tonite, I'm even more impatiently waiting for Jack Bauer. Though I admit, my allegiance will be tested by several factors tonite, including hoping to see UCLA win the NCAA mens hoops tourney for 2006.
Here's hoping that the bad weather in the D.C. area clears out soon so I don't lose the TV tonite

Why not just have Jack be on the wrong team? I thought about that for a split second when he was up on the roof with the sniper rfile. This is a truly goofy plot twist.

A bit much to swallow there. Although, I have said numerous times this season (mostly in jest) that Logan was the mastermind. It was a combination of a joke and the notion that the writers would just like to try anything that we'd never think of. Shock value almost made it too obvious.

It was seemingly leaning too strongly towards the VP...
Still - I was a bit surprised when the spineless weasel showed up; I almost... ALMOST thought that it was going to be Aaron or the Homeland Security vice-weasel.

Why not just have Jack be on the wrong team?
Jack and the Logan aren't exactly friends like he and Palmer were. That would be even more of a stretch. Besides, if he was on the wrong team, why not just both of them him in the barn.
Has anyone wondered how all the bad guys in all their vehicles are driving around Los Angeles with marshall law in effect?
So, if the VP isn't in on the master plan, what's he up to. Clearly he is in possession of knowledge that we don't know. I mean, why the power grab at CTU?

OMG!! Crazy, crazy, crazy - how can this idiot be the mastermind? He certainly was able to stumble often enough to let certain things happen without folks catching on...
the VP must still be involved somehow or other - why else would Homeland have absorbed CTU? even blondie knows it's not a good idea at this point. or how else would VP have gotten Martial Law pushed thru?
I'm in shock...
Oh - funny bit - Jack's Treo beeping incessantly while they use the GPS to navigate around and find all the baddies. Sheesh! :)
Still loved the show. I think they've done lots to keep our interest, switch up the formulas, and keep it exciting. I've never needed to find every plotline or protocol believable, why start now? ;)

When the VP asked the President if he knew about Wayne Palmer visiting the retreat, the look on the President's face gave it away for me. At that point, I knew that it was him and not the VP that was pulling the strings. The reveal at the end was no surprise to me.
I do agree that it's a stupid twist though....
DancnDude
04-03-2006, 11:19 PM
OK that twist is WAY too much! Of course I'm shocked which is what they wanted, but nothing we've seen of Logan from last season to this one would support this. He wouldn't have been acting like such an idiot by himself all season long if he was behind it all to begin with. This better just be a double-twist that they undo next week when we find out all the details.

terpfan1980
04-03-2006, 11:31 PM
Someone asked above how much time is left, and I think the answer is approximately 8 hours. (Til 7am if I recall).
That gives us 8 more episodes to get things back to an almost believable state.
... still, it could get very interesting to see just exactly where this all goes. Why in the world does Logan want things so f-ed up if not to gain power somehow. His wife and Novick, and the fictional press are calling him on the illegal 'martial law' type declaration. He's basically been complicit in plans to assassinate the Russian president, if not directly tryed to get it done. There's gotta be a bigger reason for everything, so I'm willing to watch a little longer before I call total BS on the season.

04-03-2006, 11:34 PM
Except for the part where he's portrayed as totally incompetent, I suppose that what we've seen hasn't been inconsistent with him being part of the whole deal.
I mean, when left to his own devices, he has been rather accomodating of the terrorists. He sent the Russian pres into the ambush and he ordered Jack to let the nerve gas be released in the mall.

It's not too quick to judge. Sorry, that's a cop out. It's the same thing as nina meyers, where they afforded him/her numerous opportunities to make sure the plan succeeded but never did so and created numerous plot holes along the way all because the writers hadn't decided who the mole is until the episode the mole is revealed.

Ok, so the President is the bad guy. Unbelievable but that's the story.

See, that was my thought all along after the "reveal" (gee, that sounds like Extreme Makeover: Home Edition). He could actually have a spine, but being manipulated by the Germans, Drazens, Nina (for all we know), etc.
And this "day" is only about 18 months after last "day", right? Who's to say the writers haven't created a "continued" story line. It works for me.
24 has always had "believability" issues in the past, but, that has NEVER kept me from thoroughly enjoying the show.

My thinking is that the Prez set up and allowed the terrorists to get their hands on the Centox. If everything worked out well, the gas would've been setoff in Russia. Then, with the new Terrorist Treaty, the US team would go in and sweep up the whole situation. It would leave a big, positive legacy for a President who's considered weak and incompetent.

So explain to me what blowing Michelle Dressler and Tony up had to do with any of this.
It had nothing to do with any of this... and that was the point.
The purpose of killing Tony and Michelle was to make investigators think the Palmer killing was connected to the faking of Jack Bauer's death, thus keeping them from stumbling across the information Palmer had about the terrorist (or Presidential, it would appear) plot.
It was, in theory, a pretty good idea. I know if I ever had a reason to kill someone, I'd probably kill a couple of unconnected random people first, then my target, then at least one other random person afterwards, so that the cops would be more likely to consider my intended target's murder the work of a random killer and less likely to pursue the angle of the motive that would lead them to me.
The flaw in the plan, however, was making Jack Bauer.... upset. :D

Random Thoughts:
There was something wrong with my audio last night. I heard Jack tell Bill Buchanon he was scared.
I'm going to miss the "x Cannisters of Syntox Nerve Gas"
That homeland security guy reminds me of Hannibal Lechter. "Clarise... sign the papers Clarise.."
Been a while since we've seen some first lady cleavage.
I laughed when Wayne Palmer gets on the phone with Jack, and first thing out of his mouth is, I heard about the explosion, are you ok? Analysis: He's been shot at, in an explosion of his own, unconscious for 30 min or so, stuck in the back of an SUV stowaway, looks for the asst chick, has to interogate the asst chick... how did he hear about it, and why does he have the state of mind to even ask how he's doing?
Wayne Palmer is a puss...
"I was in the Marines".
"But you never saw combat"
"uhhhhhhh"
Are we going to see a change in Logan's demeanor now? Not the bumbling idiot, but a badass, cruel, heartless villian????
Kim's not in trouble yet???
Still enjoy the show....

If they want to reel me back in from deleting the SP after next week, they need to make him not be incompetent at all, possibly be inolved in the presidential assassination last season, and have as motivation this time around wanting to be popular enough to be elected president legitimately. Of course, feigning incompetent in order to display competence is a strange way to do it, but I guess there have been some presidents in recent memory that have done that.

The President actually "growing a pair" was an interesting plot twist. Here I am looking at how the VP and Homeland Security as trying to cover-up things as the next storyline while absorbing CTU.
So when are all the field agents being informed or redeployed? Did Tony and the "team" get instrcutions from Homeland Security?
So the President is up to something, and the VP is up to something else? And to add to that the 1st Lady ..is she really looney??

As far as the "big twist," this is just another example of the fact that the writers do not plan out the season prior to starting to film the first one. It's happened every season so far. The people or situation that is ultimately the big climax at the end of the season usually has nothing to do with what happens at the beginning of the season and if you watch the beginning already knowing about the end, you will see far too many inconsistencies. I really wish they would loosely plan out the show in advance so that we wouldn't have these ridiculous plots that are obviously just attempts to create bigger and bigger surprises without ever thinking about how ridiculous they are in the context of the show.
A great big  from me.

This is starting to remind me of an episode of "Lois and Clark." The one where we find out that shortly after WWII a secret Nazi offshoot infiltrated America. They were brought up in our society and migrated into various prominent roles (elected officials, movie stars, pro athletes, etc.). Then these really powerful people all revealed the agenda they were all behind and tried to use their clout to take over America. Then Superman kicked their ass.
At least that's loosely how I remember the plot going. If Logan is indeed a bad guy, I doubt he flipped. He has probably been planning this for many many years. Or knowing 24, they will throw us yet another swerve. What's even left at this point? Is CTU getting bad info and actually working against the US?

Okay.
So this 'wringer' is the fact that Pres. (caff hack) Logan is behind ex-Pres Palmer's death and trying to squelch anybody from finding out the details of why.
What I want to know is what the VP is trying to do - save us from Logan?
Or also in this for himself?

Off topic: I think it's "ringer."
But in this case it's been more of a "whammy." :p

So how does this Logan twist tie in with the guy from his staff (I forget his name) who killed himself once he was found out?

The only way the writers could save themselves from jumping the shark over Logan would be to have him controlled by an underwear supermodel that only he could see.

Okay, so now that we know the President is the bad guy, and he knows that Aaron likely knows he's bad, the President may go after Aaron.
If a president starts going after a Secret Service guy, say with a gun, is the Secret Service guy allowed to shoot back to save himself, or, since he is sworn to save the President (and to serve the President), is the Secret Service guy obligated to assist the President by shooting himself? Discuss amongst yourselves...

After thinking about it more, I'm thinking it might still be the Vice President. He's probably got something on the president and is now pulling the strings on him. The evidence that the first lady's assistant has probably points to the president doing something that the vice president made him do.
I really hope we find out that Logan really was faking being such an incompetent wimp all this time, otherwise this plot twist just doesn't stand up.
Edit: I meant "doesn't hold up". Apologies to the poster just below...

Oh, that's good. That's very good.
Of course, Jack Bauer would've made mincemeat of the Cylons by now and gotten them to Earth half a season ago.

I'm reminded of the Phil Hartman/Ronald Reagan skit. This is exactly what I thought of. In fact, when I woke up my wife (she has an annoying habit of falling asleep for the last 10 mins. of most shows) and she asked me what happened, I told her "they pulled a 'Genius Reagan' on us!" The sad thing is she knew exactly what I meant.

I didn't get what he was talking about until your reply. Was the actress who plays Six previously an underwear model? TTIUWP

I dunno but she WAS a model. I think she has progressed well as an actress. Watch her expressions in the concluding BSG scene. Tricia Helfer is married to my hoops buddy's cousin.

How does President Logan being the bad guy reconcile with him begging Jack to come back and work for CTU...why talk the one guy who could mess up your plans back onto the case when he's ready to walk away? This makes no sense...I agree, it looks a lot like they're making it up as they go along and were just trying to find a big "wow" twist, with no regard to it being consistent with the prior details. Very disappointing!

Yeah, I supposed you can read into it now, what with hindsight being 20/20 and all. But there's nothing particularly telling about it.

I finally watched Monday's episode. I agree that the "twist" is incredibly hard to believe. My first question was whether M. Night Shaymalama what's-his-name was directing this episode...
The Mind Control™ chip has been activated!
You mean "PLAN Z?" All hail Plankton! All hail Plankton! :)

Erm... except M. Night Shyamalan does not have unbelievable twists, except maybe in the village, which IMO is not so much unbelievable as uninteresting. Maybe Brian De Palma would be a better analogy.

Well, the President's sudden shift isn't really a twist. It's more of a teleportation.
There's no way you could twist this bozo into a criminal mastermind...
Zevida

I seriously doubt the president is a criminal mastermind. More like he's a simpering puppet. He's been complicit in two terrorist attacks already today, so we know he's not exactly standing firm or anything. Just get one or two guys to pull the right strings, and I could see Logan going along with and seeming to direct whatever has gone on today.
I'm going to give the writers the benefit of the doubt and let it play out for now, because I think they can make it work.

I must be the only one who liked the twist. All along we have been complaining and whining that no president could be THAT stupid and THAT incompetent. And look. He isn't. That makes sense to me! :)
I appreciated that they didn't try to say Evelyn had been worried about the kidnapping all day long, but specifically mentioned that this just happened about an hour ago.
Didn't appreciate that Audrey went from being a complete mess and on "painful" chemicals from her "interrogation" with Jack calling for the medics to treat her to being perfectly made up, hair styled and in complete control of her faculties in less than 5 minutes.
Was the Treo actually beeping or was it the background music? Either way, I my (*^% Treo doesn't work when I go down a steep hill, much less a concrete tunnel. I want his. :D
Loved the complete snarkiness of the Homeland Security guy. He'll get his soon I'm sure.

In the earlier hours, when Bierko was in his bunker, he was using a satellite phone. I have been testing those at work and they definitely need a clear view of the open sky in order to work.

See, that was my thought all along after the "reveal" (gee, that sounds like Extreme Makeover: Home Edition). He could actually have a spine, but being manipulated by the Germans, Drazens, Nina (for all we know), etc.
I just wanted to point out, since nobody else did, that Nina Meyers is very much dead.
My question is why Evelyn has a car, and where she lives. She's the First Lady's assistant, and has been for a long time (the entire time trading e-mails with David Palmer). Doesn't she live in Washington, and isn't she just in L.A. on business with the first lady, and probably staying at the compound with her? Why does she have a car and, when she say's "I'm going home," where is that?

Here's an article from today's USA Today about the Logan shift.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/usatoday/24prezpivotsfromweaseltoevil
It says
Producers decided in October that Logan would be the villain, but Itzin was told much later. He played early scenes - accusing aide Walt Cummings of treason - with no knowledge of Logan's complicity. "When I found out, I'm sure it was psychological, but I got almost physically ill," he says. Yet "I had a sense that the string was running out; I couldn't continue to be the same guy and have it be as interesting."
It contains very mild spoilers. I would hardly call them spoilers. Probably the worst of which is
As usual, the plan went horribly awry.
...
Executive producer Evan Katz says the revelation was no Jekyll-and-Hyde moment for Logan, who had only been acting feeble. "It's not a ridiculous contrast; it's more a man hiding a secret and being a little smarter about how he projects himself than we thought."

I don't know, I still can't buy that the President of the United States, who will face re-election eventually (or in his case election, since he inherited the job in the first place) would consider making himself look like an incompetent moron a viable strategy.
They probably should have told the actor so that he could, y'know, PLAY THE PART.

He looks like an incompetent moron to us, because we have access to behind the scenes footage. He may even look like an incompetent moron to his underlings. I'm not so sure he looks like an incompetent moron to the public.
They probably should have told the actor so that he could, y'know, PLAY THE PART.
Have to agree with you there.
