Is it better to wait and purchase the DirecTV HD DVR later (it's $399 now)? With Comcast I can record all HD channels (inc. network channels) but I passed on the their HD DVR b/c of the new one coming out in June. Should i just keep Comcast and then go in June to DirecTV?

Any info is greatly appreciated.

BTW - has anyone dealt w/ Comcast installation problems? Comcast installers are complete morons (at least in Georgia). They outsource all of their work to numbskulls that don't know what they're doing. Hope the D* are better.

It may depend on when your area will start getting HD locals from DirecTV MPEG4. What is special about June?

Apparently in June DirecTV will release a new HD DVR that will record in MPEG 4 to record HD for ALL local channels.

IIRC... there has been no confirmed date yet for the release of the HR20

Any unconfirmed dates? Is June even possible?

Remember, if you purchase a DirecTV receiver, you don't own it. Rephrase your question as "Is it better to wait and lease the DirecTV HD DVR later (it's $399 now)?" and the answer should be very clear to you.

Local channels from the DirecTV satellites, only if they are available in your area, and then only the 4 major networks, CBS-ABC-NBC-FOX, the rest of the local channels will still have to come in via an OTA antenna.

OTA will continue to be MPEG2 for quite a while, years and years, perhaps even years.

The new DirecTV DVR won't be a Tivo.

The current HR10-250, which is a Tivo, is perfect for me, as I can get all the local channels OTA a lot better looking than they could possible be from D*, and I bought it before 2-28, so it is mine, owned.

What if you buy an hr10-250 off of ebay? Do you own it then? Or will D* make you lease it even though you bought it from an individual?

That would be an owned box,
convincing D* of this might take some doing though.

Don't count on it. If there is a limited number of licensed contractors in your area, D* may be calling the exact same people as Comcast.

Pro: It is easy to upgrade the disk & hack the HR10-250.
Con: It still runs v3.x Tivo software, and there is a chance (maybe!) that the HR20 may actually be an improvement over software that is now several years old.

New Comcast Tivos are coming, too. I dunno when. And of course, the Series 3 Tivo.
