View Full Version : Diplexer Confusion

I have read a bunch of diplexer threads, but am still a tad confused.
I have a far away room, with just one coax run. I can't add another coax. I want to have two inputs to this Tivo unit so we can record one show and watch another.
I have a multiswitch with two EMPTY outputs. Do I connect these two outputs to a diplexer, connect to the single coax, and at the TIVO unit use another diplexer to split the signal to the two inputs of the Tivo?
Do I have this correct?

Not correct. A diplexer is used to combine different frequencies onto the same cable. Like combining OTA and satellite on the same cable. What you want is a stacker/de-stacker. A quick search will give you all the details including the $$price$$.

Thanks Robert:
I understand now, it sounds like stacker/destacker is about a $200 investment. Doesn't seem to be a lot of options with stackers/destackers :)

And if the price didn't stop you, stackers only work with the 101 satellite location. If you want HD, foreign language channels or your locals come from the 119 satellite location, you are screwed.
Now, all is not lost. About a month ago there was a guy on here promoting a stacking device that would work with a multi-sat dish install. I don't remember the price but it should have been welcomed with open arms by the HD DirecTivo users. Nope. Barely a peep. Not sure if it was the price or the product was just vaporware.

You don't. If you have only one cable you don't use a diplexer. A diplexer only allows you to piggyback a regular cable signal along with a SINGLE satellite signal. If you "can't run another cable" then you'll have to move the Tivo to where it can pickup the two satellite connections. Use that single coax line to run channel 3 from the Tivo to the TV. Pick up an RF amplifier from Radio Shack if the distance is longer than 30 feet or so. Otherwise you'll have to use stackers. They're expensive and not without their limitations. Think really hard about just how much you can or can't run the extra sat wire.
