Sadly, I just dropped DirecTV after a good 6 years having the service (mainly for NFL Sunday Ticket). I am now looking to sell my HDVR2 DirecTV-TiVo system.
I replaced it with two series2 standalone TiVo's and raped it of the two 120GB hard drives I had installed. I am wondering where the best place to sell this unit would be. (I was headed to Ebay but then wondered if TiVoCommunity had a classified section)
I will be including the twin breeze mounting hardware with fan as well as the InstantCake image for this unit. I absolutely LOVE the two tuners (why doesn't TiVo provide a multiple tuner standalone unit??).

You are not going to get much for the unit without a hard drive in it...
Maybe $15 to $25 or so... (IMHO)
As for Why?
Cost.... The SA TiVo has to encode the video input. Where the DTivos just stored the already encoded video. Two sets of the MPEG Encoding hardware would have driven the cost of the unit up significantly.
They are offering it though with the Series 3 units that are due out sometime this year.

Well, that's quite a bit more than the dumpster is willing to give me. :)

I don't really understand what your point is. Including two tuners would be too cost prohibitive but yet they will be offering it in the new units?

The new units are HD, so it's a much higher price point. You can ask all kinds of "why didn't they..." questions:
...ever release a 2-tuner SD SA?
...release an HD SA much sooner?
...make their licensing fees much more attractive so that cable, Dish & DTV wouldn't have considered doing their own dvr?
...sell the company when they had the opportunity?
...do *something* (anything) as their market share is taken away from them by cable, dish & dtv?
Only their corporate execs really know the answers...

Ok. I think people are making a bit too much of my last question...It was really more of a mourning at the loss of the two-tuner functionality with my DirecTiVo unit then really looking for a concrete answer as to why TiVo doesn't offer the functionality. :)
Anyway, I think I'll post my HDVR2 on Ebay. I DO have a new 120GB hdd lying around, so I may image that and throw it in to make it a bit more attractive...Mainly, I'm just trying to get rid of it. We dumped DTV for financial reasons and the longer this unit sits around, the more tempting it is to reactivate my DTV service!

Just saw THIS (http://cgi.ebay.com/MODIFY-YOUR-TiVo-Series-2-Direct-tv-TO-6-2-HMO-LIFETIME_W0QQitemZ9703858418QQcategoryZ79864QQrdZ1QQcmdZView Item) on Ebay. Anyone use this software? Having HMO with my DTiVo unit would've been sweet.

Do a search for Zipper and you will find that all that is included in that auction is freely available on the internet

I think that's a good idea. It will fetch more money as a fully functional upgraded unit than each would have brought you if sold separately. The old 'whole being greater than the sum of its parts' thing definitely applies here.

I cannot believe anyone would pay $42.50 + $15 shipping for that CD. Good grief, a simple google of "tivo upgrade" brings up the Hinsdale instructions as the first link! A link to the Underground forum is also on the first page of the same google results.

There is a E-Bay seller, selling refurbished Hughes SD-DVR40s. He has a very large quantity. I won paid in the $35 to $70 for each of the auctions I won [other DVRs sold for much less]. They are factory sealed and the seller is guaranteeing them for at least a few days.. time enough to check it out anyway and put it through it's paces. The ones I received were factory sealed and had everything cables, power cords, manual, new peanut remote..everything but the access card.
The seller is very responsive and helpful answering questions quickly and shipping is same day. So if you are in the market for a refurbished DVR40 I would suggest this seller. Here is a link to his auctions.
