I subscribe to cable. I have not subscribed to Direct TV or TIVO. But the black screen is showing up on my TV covering about 75% of it. Can you give me any advice on how to make it disappear?

Sounds like the text box for closed captioning.
Try either turning CC totally off, or to CC1 if you like having closed captioning there.

This should be in your TV menu.
