I have a series one TIVO, Sony SVR 2000, I purchased it used on craigslist with no service. It worked great for recording by time and channel, but then I made the mistake of updating through the phone and all of the options to record went away except for the pause and rewind.

It seems odd that TIVO can take that away just because you don't have the service. Anyway - I don't want to spend allot of money/time hacking my TIVO with a new hard or installing a network card. But how can I get the record by time function back, without putting a new hard drive in and without hacking into with a new network card?

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Get a copy of an older SA Tivo image and install it on the drive using MFS Tools.

What if I only have a Mac laptop? I can't hook the drive up to it to run the software

A barebones PC system that someone is throwing out is plenty. Or borrow one.

OR, you can probably buy a new drive with the right image on it from PTVUpgrade, or Weaknees.

Call a TiVo CSR and explain the situation. If your DVR is an eligible one, they will send the flag to your DVR to manually record.
