View Full Version : Is this a good model to start my first mod with?

Hey guys I am going to start my tivo experience soon and was wondering if you all could give me some hints on buying my first tivo.
I have my eye on this model

PHILLIPS Series 1 TIVO DVR Model PTV300 30 hour

I want to be able to do some upgrades and do not want to get the wrong one right off the bat.

Any thoughts would be great.

That's an older Series 1 Stand Alone unit, which is the easiest to hack and has the best picture quality (IMO). You will not be able to use some the newer capablities of the Series 2s. However, there are hacks that get you most of them anyway. To me, the features I really want out of hacking, Web based control of the TiVo, Video Extraction, and streaming Video to PCs, can easily be accomplished through hacks of the Series 1s. The other Series 2 features are (IMO) mostly bells and whistles. Here's a good link for hacking a Series 1: Jenkins (http://tivo.stevejenkins.com/)

Another advantage of that model is that it is one of the few that will allow you to manually record without paying a monthly subscription.

You will have to purchase a turbonet (http://www.9thtee.com/turbonet.htm) card for $70 to get network access.

I have 2 hacked Series 1s and love them.

Depending on how big of a hard drive you intend to install in it, if you do upgrade the drive, I would recommend a cachecard instead. I have a URL restriction until I hit 5 posts so just change the turbonet in the previous URL to tivocachecard. This device allows you to add RAM to speed up menu response time. The cachecard will run you $94.95 and then 512MB RAM will vary.

I don't understand your question. Are you referring to the TiVo box or the Add-on card?
