Ok, here's my scenario.

Like a good computer nerd, I backed up the original 40gb image of my RCA DVR40 when I first received my DTivo unit. I then restored that image onto a 120gb drive and have been very pleased with it. I erased the original 40gb drive that came with the unit and have been using it as a file backup device.

However, I have the bug to hack the O/S and try out some of the features that standalone Tivo's have. But here's my problem.

My wife is adamant that I do not wipe the 120gb drive in my desire to hack the Tivo O/S. So, I'm trying to restore my DVR40 image onto a Western Digital 40gb hard drive just like the one that originally came with the unit.

* I have my DVR40 backup image in a FAT32 drive which I connected to Primary Master IDE connection and it is jumpered as a master. The file is in the root directory on that drive and is called "TIVO.BAK". It's around 300mb in size.

* I have my empty 40gb drive connected to the Secondary Slave IDE connection and jumpered as a slave.

* I have my CD-Rom drive connected to the Secondary Master IDE connection and jumpered as a Master.

I used the following command after booting with the LBA 48 boot CD:

mkdir /mnt/dos
mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/dos

mfsrestore -zpi /mnt/dos/tivo.bak /dev/hdd

After running this command I get: Backup target not large enough for entire backup by itself.

I really don't want to buy a larger drive at this point, I merely wanted to get the Tivo running on this 40gb drive so I can hack it and see how I like it before committing to hacking the 120gb drive.

Is there a way to force my backup to restore on a same sized drive? Any help would be appreciated.

Unfortunately two different manufacturer's 40GB hard drives may not be exactly the same size, and this appears to be the problem. You could get a new image from somebody here on the forum and start fresh.

I had this same exact experience this weekend. I have both my Orig TiVo drive that I could mount, but was UNSTABLE to begin with, and the new drive that I wanted to shrink my expanded image onto. Unfortunately the orig TiVo drive read as being about one or two megs larger than my new target drive, I never could get it to work.
