I'm trying to upgrade my HR10-250 from a single 300 GB drive to a single 500 GB drive. When I tried to do the copy mfsrestore failed with the message "Backup target not large enough for the entire backup by itself."

A little research here led me to the conclusion that I had hit the limit on the number of partitions. So, I went back and tried again without saving the recorded programs. This succeeded.

There do appear to be 15 or 16 partitions on each of the drives. Mfsinfo says the drive can be upgraded 3 more times, but I've read that this information is not reliable.

Anyway, is there something that I have missed that would allow me to upgrade and preserve my recordings or do I need to go on a TV watching binge?

(As an aside, wasn't there a program, other than mfsinfo, that would display information about the partitions on a TiVo drive? I think the name started with a "p". Maybe this program is not on the weaknees LBA48 boot disk.)

300 GB drive is not stock on that unit, so when you set up that new drive, you expanded it once, hence cannot expand it anymore. You have to use the -s option to shrink, and yes, lose recordings. You may want to use the R4 option, and of cource, use a swap of 256 or so.

you want pdisk -l /dev/hdX to list partitions.
