View Full Version : Wired network adapters?

I bought a friend one of the "free" refurbed boxes last week, and then found out she doesn't have a land line. So I need to get her a wired adapter. I thought the difficulty in finding compatible adapters was mostly limited to the wireless side. I thought you could pretty much buy any wired adapter until I read that even the one TiVo sells doesn't work unless you have 7.2.2.
So can someone point me to a place online where I can buy a network adapter guaranteed to work with TiVo even if the software it comes with is still 5.xxx?
Thanks,
Dylan

I have to second the netgear. I did an instantcake on my series 2 which brougt it down to original software and it worked fine. You will however need to make at least one phonecall if the software is pretty old. If you already have a wired adapter i would just connect the device at your house, or in another room at your friends, then let the phone do the work until the system is up to a level the adapter will handle then plug it into the network.

If you ordered one of the free refurb'd boxes last week it will come with v7.2.0
In the meantime, I recommend using your search skills to combine items from this page
http://customersupport.tivo.com/knowbase/root/public/tv2183.htm?
and do a search on any that interest you on this page

ACI have two Netgear FA120 adapters and they are bulletproof and I highly recommend them.
The rest of the adapters that I use are the flimsy Linksys USB200M version 1 adapters which I really don't recommend. I haven't had a problem with any of my USB200M adapters, but I can really understand why people have a problem with them. The RJ-45 flip out connection is really fragile and sometime it can be problematic to make a good firm connection with the flip out connector.
The other major advantage of the FA120 adapters is that you don’t have to worry about version compatibility issues, between the adapter and any TiVo software.
If you want to use the USB200M on a DirecTiVo you have to use a version 1 adapter which is almost impossible to find NEW in a retail store, the version 2 adapters do not work. If you want to use the USB200M on a SA TiVo you have to use a version 1 adapter or to use a version 2 adapter you have the advanced release version 7.2.2 installed.

Thanks everyone for the recommendations. I just ordered the Netgear FA120. It is good to know that there are not the same version compatability issues with this one as there are with some of the others that are listed on the Tivo support page. Since I am ordering online it is a little hard to investigate the packaging to make sure I'm getting the right one.
Also thanks Mick66 for the knowledge that the box I'm getting should come with 7.2.0. It will be nice to not have to try to explain the dialing prefix hack to my friend over the phone. :)

I bought my Netgear FA120 on Ebay for a nice price and haven't had a single problem with it at all. Plugged it in and don't need to worry about it at all.
