A service rep at TiVo just told me that lifetime service would be available to anybody with a TiVo till April 16th if you called for it. He said it did not matter where you got the TiVo itself: E-Bay, Best Buy, your own TiVo on monthly , etc (except buying a unit from TiVo directly). I would like this confirmed on this BB by TiVo.

From the STICKY thread posted at the VERY TOP of this VERY forum... Posted by an actual TIVO employee even...
"If you purchased your non-bundled TiVo DVR prior to 3/16/06, you'll have until 4/15/06 to call and activate Product Lifetime service on the box. This is provided there is no conflict with any other terms of your purchase (such as the requirement to activate service by 3/31 for the current 80 hour offer on tivo.com). Activating Product Lifetime Service is not available online; you must call TiVo Customer Support (1-877-367-8486) in order to activate Product Lifetime service. Boxes purchased on or after 3/16/06 will not be eligible to activate Product Lifetime service. After 4/15/06, this option is no longer available."

That not what the Rep told me, you can purchase your TiVo on 4/16/06 from say BestBuy or receive a used one from E-Bay by 4/16/06 and get lifetime buy calling, I ask that very question. The date of purchase did not matter nor where you got the unit (except from TiVo itself) you just had to call by 4/16/06 for lifetime.

The Rep was WRONG. Only if you purchase before 3/16 do yo have until April 16th or 15th what I was told.

How can they tell when you purchased the box when you call to activate it?

I got the info from a TiVo rep at TiVo (I was using Best Buy as an example) as he said they can't tell when you bought the unit so they were told just to upgrade any customer that wanted lifetime till 4/16/06
He might be wrong that why I am asking TiVo to answer the question on this form

TiVo has already proven there is no such thing as right and wrong.

That's the loophole, and the reason why the rep told the original poster what he did. The only way they can tell when you bought it is if you bought it directly from them.

Based on the latest rules I've seen, it depends on whether your TiVo Service Number is prime.

Tivo already posted on this in the sticky post at the top of the forum. This post has been updated many times as new information has been made available or things needed to be clarified.
Personally, I think this is the "official" line and you will not get anyone from Tivo to post otherwise. I'd be willingto bet that they would activate a unit till 4/16 no matter whan it was purchased though. I just can't see them asking you to fax in a receipt before they will allow you to get lifetime. But who knows.
You can give it a try and I'll bet you will be fine, but don't be all pissed off if they don't allow it.

This begs the question of whether its cheaper to get a bundled TiVo and pay my taxes on time, or get Lifetime and pay interest and penalties to the IRS?

I hear you can call the IRS and setup monthly payments if you do not like the pay all upfront plan ;)
PS - and I think the clause on when the TiVo was bought was to cover www.tivo.com adn people rushing to buy directly from there.
TiVo would have no idea when you bought a TiVo DVR from a retail store

I'm glad to see Tivo really planned and prepared for the biggest billing changes in the history of the company. I wonder if they worked as hard on this as they did kids zone?

called to get the lifetime activation and the rep said I could not do it. I explained that a rep told me as long as you purchased before the cutoff you were fine.
The rep went to his supervisor and see what she could do which was nothing, no lifetime whatsoever. I immediately cancelled my order.
I then was forwarded to returns, I told my story and asked for an RMA to return the boxes. That rep told me he could offer the lifetime, but could not apply the 12 month subs that I had to buy with the boxes!
So its the price of the box, 299 lifetime sub, and 155 1 year sub certificate.
I would those guys would get their act together, I am really ticked at the lack of management over there at TIVO.
If anyone has any suggestions.. I am open to them..:)

Seems like mass confusion at TiVo. Give them a week or 2 to get their acts together. Have a feeling that LT subs will be accepted until 4/15. The current rules are too confusing to the reps, so they'll probably just apply a blanket deadline for everyone.

Okay,
I'm ticked at this new "policy" change it does nothing for us loyal customers who've been there for a while now but I did get a rep that could help me tonight. I had to call the service number and go to retention. They were able to set up the gift I bought with the lifetime and the guy seemed to quote what has been written all over these threads. Although it seemed as if the regular service reps don't know of this policy and don't care.
