View Full Version : Stymied on 2-drive upgrade

Early signs of drive failure on previously-upgraded 160 mb drive (137 usable) in my HDVR2 prompted the upgrade. Wanted to save recordings, so used the Weaknees Interactive Online TiVo Upgrade to replace the old drive and add a second drive for expanded capacity at the same time. New drives are a 250 mb Samsung SP 2514n (only 137 mb usable because of the previous drive's expansion) and a 120 mb Maxtor Dmax plus 9. No apparent problems doing the pipe restore to both drives, and after copying recordings it seemingly successfully married the drives and showed 274 combined usable hours.

However, upon installation, I go through the welcome screen and the DTV almost-there screen before spontaneous reboot after reboot, never getting stability. I vaguely remember seeing a fix for this problem here some time ago, but couldn't find it. My jumpers and cables are in the right places, I believe: master for the Samsung (which was first in the pipe sequence when copying) and slave for the Maxtor. I know there are some different slave possibilities on Maxtor drives, and I tried several possibilities, but no difference. The copying was done with no jumper on this drive, and seemed to work fine. The cable is in the right position on each drive, and I don't think there are any other mechanical issues I've overlooked. Also tried doing a one-disk copy and then adding the second drive pretending the first replacement was the original, but same reboot cycle problem.

BTW, before I found that I couldn't expand the Samsung to it's full size because of the partition limits, I did a one-drive copy of the old drive, and it booted and operated flawlessly. Its adding the second drive that's giving me fits.

Might I need to run another command that wasn't part of the Weaknees single command pipe instructions, like a tpip or a LB48? Might I have messed up the drive(s) somehow by trying the single-drive upgrade first? I'm all ears.
