I am just starting, I after reviewing the threads and have a question for the group. I have a TIVO TCD-5400 and want to get to the bash prompt. I have tried using telnet and ftp and neither will work. Then I noticed discussion that these models may need to have an eprom mod.

Is it possible to get to the bash with this model? Can someone explain how to do it? I hate asking this question, but after reviewing the archives, I cant find out how to do it.

This is another crazy question, but can you take the hard drive out of the TIVO and boot it up in a dos computer using the MSF tools boot disk to get to the prompt? Will it accomplish the same result?

Thanks!

You can't a get bash prompt for that model without a prom mod. A prom is a read only chip that has software burned into it prior to installation. The software on the prom will prevent you from getting bash access. Since you can't write to the prom to change it, you need to have the prom replaced with one that has modified software on it. This is not a do it yourself project. You can do a google search or look in the other forum to see if anyone can perform the service for you.

It can be a DIY project if you are so skilled and equipped.

But if you do that won't you go blind, or grow hair on your palms? :D
