Forgive me for this noobish question but, is the option to play video from PC to Tivo (thus displaying it on-screen) a new feature? I was going to open up my Tivo to add a second hard drive, but now that I can simply transfer from Tivo to PC and stream the videos from there to watch on my TV, why add a second drive, I now have access to 130gb of more storage for my Tivo. I've only noticed this feature a few days ago, so I was wondering how new this is.

Thank You sir :) I'm at my girlfriend's house 90% of the time, so I rarely watch TV at home, which is why I never even noticed this feature. :)

Heh. Before we were married, I was at my wife's 95% of the time -- even had my TiVo there in addition to hers. :D

This works even better with Galleon. You can "push" recordings to the PC from the Tivo interface and stream from the PC as well. The only thing missing is the ability to delete a show on the PC from the Tivo interface.

EDIT: In fact, I believe galleon is a complete replacement for Tivo desktop. It does everything TD does plus a whole lot more and runs on OSX, Linux and Windows (Maybe even Solaris and others too as it's java based). Look at http://galleon.tv if you want to give it a whirl.

After talking about mine so much, she strategically gave me hints that she was hoping for a Tivo box as a Christmas gift, so I got her one. At the time I was working for Best Buy, So I bought a 40-hour Series 2 that cost me $125, totalling $25 after the $100 rebate. :) The 40-hour died a few days after Christmas, so I lucked out again. I went back to work to do an exchange, we had no 40-hour's left, so I was "forced" to take home an 80-hour box instead ,at no extra charge. My manager put it through as an even exchange because 1- we no longer carry 40-hour boxes, and 2-the 80-hour price dropped to only $20 more than what I paid for the 40-hour. So, all in all, it cost me $25 for a brand new 80-hour Tivo box. :) When I bought mine, it was $150 with a $100 rebate. So I spent a total of $75 on two boxes, one 40-hour and one 80. :)

EDIT: Correction, mine at home is also an 80-hour, so make that two 80-hour boxes for $75 total :)

Wow, thanks. I am definitely going to give it a shot tonight. :)

It's a great app. It's too bad that the developer (Leon) is probably going to give up on it. His reasons are stated in his blog on the Galleon site. At least it's open source. Maybe someone else with the skillz will step up.

Doesn't even install for me. I get up to "Installing Galleon Service..." then immediately get an error box "The Galleon service could not be installed:6". Three tries, three strikes.. I'll stick with TD then.

go to the HME forum here
http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/forumdisplay.php?f=35

you can get all the help you need on installing Galleon.

I have it working on a Linux box so have no help to offer on Windows.

It's definitely worth the effort once you see all it can do. Go to http://apps.tv and follow instructions if you want to get HME working quickly and preview some apps. It's a hosted service so you can't customize it to your needs but it's a quick way to add some HME services.

Precisely, it has been around since Sept 05.

And Galleon doesn't push, the TiVo pulls.

And Galleon doesn't push, the TiVo pulls.

Well, let's just say that I can copy a recording FROM the Tivo TO my Linux server running Galleon. I can do this while sitting on the couch and holding my Tivo remote control and navigating the Tivo menus. I do not have to be sitting at a computer console to do this. It also let's me Queue up recordings for copying. I believe that Tivo desktop can only do this from the PC where it is running.

Also, like Tivo Desktop on Windows, I can copy a recording FROM the Linux server running Galleon TO the Tivo. I can do this while using the Tivo remote control.

The end result is that you have a nice on-line storage meachanism for Tivo recordings with full access via the Tivo menus. Using this mechanism, you can have an indefinite amount of storage for Tivo recordings.

The only thing missing is the ability to delete recordings on the server from the Tivo menu. You have to delete the files manually at the PC console (or via remote access). It would be nice if someone writes a Galleon module to allow a delete of server side recordings.
