View Full Version : TiVo cancelled my order!!!

I'm new to the whole TiVo scene and I'm really excited about the capabilities of my box. I ordered the unit from TiVo<dot>com a couple weeks ago along with the Wireless G adapter. After about a week of no contact from them I grew concerned as to when my order would ship. After calling customer service I was told that they were waiting for all of the items to be in stock before shipping. But, on the website it specifically says that if you order a backordered item along with other items that the other items will be shipped with the normal time frame. I told them this and they said that they would release the order for shipment and that I'd get my unit in a few days.
After receiving my unit I waited another week before I was curious as to how long it would take before my wireless adapter would ship. I called them up today and after talking to 4 different reps I was told that in order to ship my TiVo unit they had to cancel the wireless adapter order. Gee, when were they going to tell me that? I've sat here for the past week watching my email for a shipping confirmation and staring out the window watching the FedEx truck drive by without stopping.
When I went to re-order the adapter I then understood the full scale of the inconvenience they caused me. Not only do I have to wait another week for it to ship, but I now have to pay additional shipping costs. WTF? I hope this isn't an indication of the customer service I can expect for the next year...
Like a lot of manufacturers, TiVo isn't that great of a retailer. I suggest someplace like Best buy or Circuit city. It's quicker to buy and any problems/returns will be way quicker.

Why does this post sound so familiar?
Buy your wireless adapter at someplace like Circuit City. It'll be easier to return it anyway, this way, in case something is wrong with it. Just make sure to get the right one...check the Tivo website for info on compatible adapters.

I think he is getting the TiVo wireless adapter - which is a good move, they are tweaked to work much better on a TiVo than plain old USB wireless adapters for PCs.
anyhow TiVo has not been able to get them shelfspace in retail stores yet, and since they are a MFG and not a retailer they have a hard time keeping a stock of them.
keep trying though, you will be gald you got the TiVo adapter. Also keep posting here, you are likely to get a more complete answer since 4 or 5 posters will reply with 4 or 5 experiences.
welcome to the forum

I bought mine local and had to return it for an adapter that was TIVO certified.

Thanks for the offcial welcome :D
I was indeed talking about the TiVo branded adapter. I'm really looking forward to hooking it up to my home network. So far I'm really happy with the TiVo experience, I just wish their customer service didn't have to sour it a bit.

Are these out of stock again? I thought they just removed the backordered status?

They are backordered again. I ordered one on Saturday or Sunday, and they took my order with no mention of a backorder. And I paid for 2-day shipping. But I have not heard a peep out of them since I ordered -- though based on other people's experience I didn't really expect to get a confirmation email until the day the thing actually arrived. But now I wonder if I am in backorder limbo. That would be disappointing. And a little bit annoying. TiVo really does need to work on their communication with customers.

They seriously need to fix the website. Its such an easy thing to do. They will only ship them separately if you place TWO differenmt orders, one for the backordered item and one for the box. I suggest anyone ordering a backordered adaptor and a box make sure to do two different orders. Its stupid but it will save the headaches. Hopefully they fix the wording on the website soon! :(

They are backordered again.
That explains why they're selling for $90+ on eBay.

Wow, you were actually able to get an answer on your order? I placed an order on Tuesday and paid for 2 day shipping. although I should have my new adapter in my hands, they can't even tell me if it has shipped. I have never seen such incompetence in my life. I asked for a supervisor three times, was told three times that no one was available. I don't think this is Tivo, but one of the fulfillment centers they use. It took me a few questions to get the CSR to admit that, so Tivo should know how bad these companies are making them look. I was told a few times -- although not consistently -- that the "computers went down," which may have been a good generic excuse in 1997, but not today.

I ordered one of the free 40 hour refurb boxes. I forgot to order the Tivo wireless adapter at the time, so I went back to the web site a few minutes later and ordered a Tivo adapter separately. I received both in less than a week, on the same day (this Wednesday), in their own packages. I'm surprised to hear they're backordered again. It shouldn't be that hard to keep up with demand.

Stinks that they are backordered again because I don't think that $50 is a bad price for the G adaptar. If you look at the other "compatible" G adaptars they are in the 70-90 dollar range. I would stay away from the B wireless adaptars if you want to use the networking functions of TV Desktop (and take advantage of USB2). Luckily my Tivo is close enough to my router to go wired (Netgear FA120-$25) and couldnt be happier with it.

Follow up:
I did get a call from "TiVo" this morning. Telling me that 1) the adapter was backordered  and 2) that my credit card didn't go through. Five days after the fact. There was no problem getting through the online order. I even got an order confirmation that I printed. But somehow there was a problem with the card. Grrr.
So I gave the nice lady my card information again, and she promised said she would give it to "them" to run through again (why couldn't she do it?), and they would call me if there was a problem. I can't tell you what confidence I have in that happening, or of getting my adapter without calling them again.
Makes me grumpy.

Follow up to my follow up:
So I got an email Monday saying that they had received my order. Okay. I figured that put me in the backorder queue. And then Tuesday morning I received an email saying that my adapter had shipped. I didn't really believe it, but it did have a tracking number. I figured I was going to get a pair of TiVo socks or something. But this morning the FedEx showed up and delivered my shiny new TiVo Wireless Adapter. Pretty cool. And only a week later than I expected when ordering it (well, it beats 4/6). So I'm glad to have the adapter, and I'll accept that the delay might have been caused by incorrect credit card info. I'm not happy about the delay in contacting me about the alleged problem with the card, but at least they put it right.
So, overall, I'm going to rate this experience with TiVo CS and sales as more or less neutral.

Yeah, to follow up to my post I got an email with the tracking number for my order today. So, I should get my adapter by Friday. So it took a couple extra weeks, but I'll finally get it.

Does the Tivo wireless adapter need a separate power source?

No, it is bus powered.
