Well, I do not know what to do... with lifetime ending today.

I want to get a new series 2 80hr tivo and activate it but I don't know if it is worth it or not...

I current have at home

Series 1 Tivo (Lifetime)
Replay 4000 Series (Lifetime)
Comcast 6412 HD ($9.99 Monthly)

Do you guys think I should get a new series 2? and acitvate it for lifetime?

Is the features of Series 2 worth the upgrade over series 1?

I do think the new features of the Series 2 are worth the investment.
I myself have 2 units with lifetime and several monthly sub'd units and think its a no brainer to grab lifetime while it still is available.

Based on ebay type resale, I'd say get the S2 if you sell the S1.

Do you have a home network and a broadband internet connection? The features are cool and all, but if you are mostly interested in the core functionality of a TiVo, the series 2 may not be worth it considering the added costs of the unit and service.

Is the S2 more restrictive than S1? I hear that the S2 has more restrictions like encryption on video extraction.

Figure out where you'll likely be in 6 months or so...

You're with Comcast, so there'll probably be a TiVo DVR option from them by around then. Recording the original datastream is really much better than encoding it to MPEG2 from an analog source; plus it'll be supporting two tuners.

The series 1 lifetime has considerable value on EBay.

I'd sell the Series 1 for sure.

You could buy the Series 2 and lifetime now; it'll probably retain most of its value to resell within the next year anyway, so reselling it will always be an option. Realisitically if I were in your position with HD obviously a concern... I think I'd wait for the Comcast TiVo version or for the Series 3 to come out then sell the Series 1 off and not worry about not having lifetime on anything.

No. Shows uploaded to a computer via TiVo's Desktop program are DRM'ed--but you don't have this function on an S1 anyway.

Well, you have until 8pm Pacific tomorrow to buy Product Lifetime. We do have a 30-day money back guarantee. I'd say pick up a Series2 and a network adapter, try out the features, and return it if you don't think they represent a significant upgrade in functionality. I'm betting you'll keep it.

We have announced a LOT of new functionality for Series2 units lately, especially ones with broadband.

If you purchased lifetime on your Series 1 before 1-21-00, you'll be able to transfer the lifetime to a Series 3.

Stephen, now I need clarification: In an earlier post, you said "Are there any exceptions? Yes. We'd like to clarify a few points regarding Product Lifetime going away:<snip> if you purchased your non-bundled TiVo DVR prior to 3/16/06, you'll have until 4/15/06 to call and activate lifetime service on the box..." This is still the policy, correct?

Thanks for your clear and well written posts and thanks in advance for your reply.

Series 2 features that are worth the upgrade even if you don't have network access:
- Overlap protection
- Undelete
- Grouping in Now Playing list

And get the lifetime. TiVo's already admitted it was too good of a deal and that's why they're getting rid of it.

Yeah.. the only problem with that is that... I am NOT the original owner.

I don't think it matters if it is now in your name.

I do not think it is on my name. Do I call them up to change the subscription to my name?

I've never done a transfer. Maybe someone else can answer that. Once it's done, Tivo can tell you when the lifetime was activated.
