By YURI KAGEYAMA Associated Press Writer

TOKYO (AP) -- Sony will put off the release of its much awaited PlayStation 3 console until November from its planned spring debut because of delays in finalizing its next-generation optical disc technology, the company said Wednesday.

Ken Kutaragi, the head Sony's video games division, made the announcement at a hastily called news conference after reports of the delay surfaced in the business daily Nihon Keizai Shimbun and other papers.

The PlayStation 3 is critical for Sony Corp.'s profits and brand image, so the delay is a major setback for the Japanese electronics and entertainment company as it struggles to mount a recovery after several years of poor earnings.

The reports sent Sony's stock tumbling 1.8 percent to 5,470 yen ($46) Wednesday. Kutaragi announced the decision after the close of the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

The new timeline means that the PlayStation 3 will still hit store shelves simultaneously in Japan, North America and Europe, just in time for Christmas.

Kutaragi said Sony is still trying to finalize the copyright protection technology and other standards for the Blu-ray DVD disc, the format for PlayStation 3, and next-generation video for the company's electronics gadgets in the works.

"I'd like to apologize for the delay," Kutaragi said at a Tokyo hotel. "I have been cautious because many people in various areas are banking on the potential of the next-generation DVD."

Blu-ray preparations were initially to have been completed by last September, but now won't be finalized until next month, he said.

The delay comes at a time when competition in next-generation game consoles is heating up with U.S. software maker Microsoft Corp. already putting the Xbox 360 on sale last year. Nintendo Co., the Japanese manufacture of Game Boy machines and Pokemon and Super Mario game software, is also planning its version called Revolution later this year.

The PlayStation series is now the dominant brand for home consoles, helping support Sony's bottom line in recent years, and controlling about 60 percent of the global market, according to Kutaragi. Sony has shipped nearly 204 million machines worldwide when combining shipments for the original PlayStation and its upgrade PlayStation 2.

Toshiaki Nishimura, analyst for Yasuda Asset Management Co., said the delay is likely to hurt game revenue for Sony, but the announcement wasn't a big surprise for the market, which had anticipated a delay. Speculation about a possible delay had been growing in the last few months.

"Sony is merely at the starting point of a race," Nishimura said, adding that more time is needed to assess PlayStation 3 and the advanced gadgets that will run on the same computer chip called "cell" that Sony is developing with Toshiba Corp. and IBM Corp.

"We are even a bit relieved that Sony has definitely said it's coming out with the PS3 because that's so critical for its cell business," he said.

The PlayStation 3 console can be used as a Blu-ray DVD player, but will also read previously released PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games, Kutaragi said. It will also have a hard disk drive, broadband and wireless Internet connections, and support high-definition televisions.

The company is expecting monthly production of 1 million machines, and targeting production of 6 million units for the fiscal year through March 2007, Kutaragi said.

Any setback in the PlayStation business could deal a big blow to Sony, which had just announced in January that it will post a profit of 70 billion yen ($592 million) for the fiscal year through March, instead of sinking into a 10 billion yen ($85 million) loss, as projected earlier.

For decades, Sony symbolized Japan's manufacturing power exemplified by the original Walkman. But in recent years, the company, which also has movie and music businesses, was battered by declining electronics prices.

Sony's core electronics division has lost money for two straight fiscal years. Since Welsh-born Howard Stringer took over last year as the first foreigner to head the company, Sony has been trying to achieve a turnaround.

It's only been in recent months Sony has made a comeback in flat-panel TVs using liquid crystal displays manufactured in a joint venture with South Korean rival Samsung Electronics Co. It has also come out with Walkman MP3 digital music players to catch up with the hit iPod from Apple Computer Inc.

I can just see this Nov/Dec: The kid wants the hottest media buzz item of the season - PS3 - which is rumored to be in short supply; the parents want an S3. Will TiVo rise above the noise?

Windows Vista with CableCard support should be out around that time also.

The delay should help with unit costs. Since Blu-ray is already in production for a May product launch of the first players, the cost of drive components and media will be down in six months, and a lot of the teething issues will be worked out. The PS3 will also include a 60GB drive in every box, and drive prices always drop over time. It also gives them more time to debug Cell production. All-in-all, not a disastrous event for Sony, not trivial, but not major. If it had been pushed to 2007, as some rumors had been reporting, that would've been huge. And the product details released - the drive being standard, the new online service which is more like MS's Live, Linux as the OS, make the PS3 even more appealing.

The main thing is there'll be major shortages for the Christmas season; that's never a good thing for something that would be an appealing Christmas gift. Figure 1-2 million for the world market before Christmas. That's really small.

I think I'm going to be broke this Christmas. Too many things I want to get my hands on...

Sony stated they still expect to sell 6 million units through March 2007. I'd expect them to be at least 2 million by Xmas - knowing Sony they'll start production in advance and have a couple million units ready for launch. That's really not a weak launch - and we don't know what the price will be, but I'm betting well over the Xbox 360's launch price.

All true, but I think the question posed above with regard to Tivo is a good one - if you have home entertainment dollars competing in the holiday season - Tivo S3 vs. PS3 - who wins? I'd have to give PS3 the edge.

(Note to Tivo marketing: Call the next generation hardware The Tivo DMR PS3 :) )

So now I don't feel too bad about getting a PS2 in December! (It ended up being free, from points to expire on my Sony credit card.. but I still felt a little bit weird getting something when "the new one" was coming out so soon and would be backward compatible..) I'm enjoying Ico & Bard's Tale though..

..and what does this thread have to do with Tivo anyhow???

I expect the PS3 would win for most - since I do expect it to cost less than the S3, and it is a more versatile product - gaming, DVD, BD, and probably online content, all in one. (Wouldn't an MRV/TTG client for PS3 be neat? ;-) )

I do expect it to cost less than the S3

The XBox 360 cost $399 at launch right? "Well over" that would be what? $600-$800

TiVo said the target price for an S3 was going to be $500-$800, so it sounds like they'll be in roughly the same price bracket. In fact the S3 may be even more affordable if they do the "no money upfront" pricing like they're doing with the S2 now or if retailers get wise and only offer PS3 in high priced bundles like they're doing now with the XBox 360.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't see people choosing between a PS3 and a TiVo S3. The PS3's market is much bigger is it not?

"TiVo said" the target price is $500-800? When? When I'd asked the answer was that pricing is yet to be determined. I think $800-1000 could easily be S3 launch price, though I'd love to see it less than that.

I was discussing the PS3 pricing with some folks recently and the general feeling is that if it is more than $500 it is going to be a hard sell as a 'game console', which is what most people will see it as. The XBox 360 was $399 for the full bundle and $299 for 'core'. By November MS will probably drop the price to undercut the PS3 by even more, and release Halo 3 to counter. Plus there should be $500 or less BD and HD-DVD systems out then, so being too much higher wouldn't move them as A/V systems to that market.

The PS3 could be higher, but the game console market doesn't like high prices, and they want to ship 6 million units in under 6 months.

You presumably already know this.. but the silly thing is that the core system isn't even backwards compatible.. and those going for the budget system would be more likely to want to be able to play old games, IMHO.

This is one area where Sony atleast has good sense. Poor Microsoft. They just dont' understand the game console industry very well yet.

This is VERY optimistic! Blu-Ray isn't out yet and only when I see a unit on the shelf will I believe it's out. There is delay after delay with blu-ray and hddvd. They announced a hub that they already took out of the final unit. I wouldn't be surprised to see something similar with the HD happened. Sony will be lucky to deliver 200,000 units to the US before Xmas. I worked the PS2 launch and that was a manufacturing nightmare and that was with over a year old dvd standard. Now were talking about a not yet released blu-ray standard and cost of manufacturing that new disc. So a 2007 delay is still very possible in the states and in Europe. They may be able to unload a token amount of system to meet that date, but nothing in the millions for several months. All of this and I haven't even mentioned the patent infringement case they have loosed for 100 million dollars and possible future payments. Maybe thats why we will get the boomerang instead of the dual shock controller.

Hell, the Premium system isn't fully backward compatible. The compatible list is only like 200 titles long and most are sub-par games. You can't even play any of the Burnout racing games on the 360. But you can play Barbie's horse-riding game. That's just sad.

I agree the BC issue needs to clear up allot more. Many of the games that are on the list don't actually work. Forza has major slowdown, Caos Theroy locks up when loading, and there are plenty more problems. However BC is a minor issue compared to pricing and other features people want. I mean does anybody play GT1 or 2 on there PS2 now?

I think if the core systems don't move in the fall and winter of 06 at a 250 or 200$ price tag then MS will discontinue it. However if a third party vendor steps up and releases a 20$ memory card. Then i could see the core taking off for those people who have no plans to ever play on live and only buy a couple games a year.

I look forward to blu-ray and the PS3, but I won't pay more then 500$ for it. I'll probably get it in 07 when more movies and more games are out for it.

So you can add it to the Core system, but the complete system is really a better value if you want to go that way.
